Spanish police have identified the body of a girl found floating in a river estuary in southwest Spain last night as that of missing five-year-old Mari Luz Cortes.
Her disappearance less than two hours drive from Praia da Luz in the Algarve had prompted police to investigate whether there was any link to the apparent abduction of Madeleine McCann.
The child went missing almost eight weeks ago on her way back from buying sweets at a shop 200 yards from her family home in Huelva, the provincial capital near the border with Portugal.
The Spanish girl's parents had repeatedly said that they were convinced Mari Luz had been taken against her will on Jan 13 and the McCanns had included her image in a poster campaign to find their own daughter.
Last night the badly decomposed body was spotted in water next to a petrol station jetty around 6pm on Friday. Police identified the child from the clothes she was wearing and her parents were expected to carry out a formal identification last night.
A police spokesman said that an initial examination had shown the child had suffered a serious blow to the head but no formal cause of death was expected until an autopsy could be performed overnight.
Gerry and Kate McCann sent a message of support to Mari Luz's parents.
The McCanns, whose daughter Madeleine has been missing for more than 10 months, said they were "extremely saddened" by the news.
"It's an absolute tragedy for Mari Luz's family," said the McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell last night.
"Gerry and Kate's thoughts and prayers are with them now and through the coming days.
"They had developed a sense of unity with Mari Luz's parents, although they had never spoken directly, as both families were going through similar agonies."
Police sources said Mari Luz's body had on the same pink leotard and boots as the day she vanished. Her distraught parents Juan Jose Cortes, 34, a former professional footballer, and Irene Suarez were last night preparing to formally identifying the body.

I hope to God not, but it has crossed my mind too. I just cannot shake off the feeling that Madeleine is still in Portugal.
This lawyer, must be really convinced if he keeps spending his own money to do this, apparently he paid last time and then went back to work to earn more money to pay the divers again.
You would think that the PJ would organise a proper dive of this lake wouldn't you? Sometimes I get the distinct impression that the PJ do not actually want to find Madeleine.

My bet is they will come back with things, such as I cant read and the post doesnt really say anything of the sort.
I think it is best left up to the proper authorities to investigate the claims made in this post, as well as any privacy breaches.

In my opinion, the lawyer does beleive what he has been told. There will be reasons for this, he wouldnt just take a call from any old nut and believe it.
Jane, 'underworld' sources would report it, the same as anyone else. But how does an underworld figure report a crime like this to the police? Coming from an underworld source doesnt invalidate the information.
But I have read the dam/lake is enormous and it will be difficult to find anything in there, especially after such a long time.

With some it might work, but I had a good solicitor friend and she tied them in knots.
The child could have had untold problems for all the big mouth cared, she was silenced.

Re the underworld who knows how these villains work? But remember they have children and brothers and sisters too and we all know what happens to people that harm children inside prison. I believe they would tell if they knew, or most of them anyway.
The lake is vast and this is why they need specialist divers with specialist sonar and lighting equipment etc with experts planning where to look and dive Lakes have tides and currents so an expert on this would be able to map out where a body would more likely be.
I just hope to God that she is not in there.
I wonder if they have checked the banks properly?
Also didn't Mari-Luz's parents request that the police search boats etc where little Mari was found? They are distraught poor people and sound very angry that they were not listened to.

Yes, Rosie. It is a well known fact that police often get more valid imformation from the underworld because they hear more than the average general public.
And as you say, where a child is concerned most criminals will move heaven and earth to get a result.

I read or tried to, the article -but the transalation wasn't the best so I am not sure if I read it correctly. A pattern would be most ominous. You said 'chilling' which is the right word exactly!!!
Did the police question the 2 girls Mari Luz told towait for her at the Kiosk? What is their stance on this? At that time of day someone knows more. Why isn't it in the papers?

I also think the social worker things is an idle boast. However, it may not be, and it may be that someone has breached trust. Also, the other thing written in the post accuse the Social Services of not doing their job properly, this too should also be reported. Social services has a very tough job without being libelled in that way.

I hope that there is not another 2 children found the same way as Mari Luz. If there has been, how is that the British press has not reported it.
Surely this type of thing is newsworthy, especially with the opening up of Europe. And one would think that children of all countries in Europe would be affected.

This is true, yesterday Jane reminded me of something Alsa3bellies said when she opened her blog, basically anyone was allowed to post regardless of their views as long as they did not use offensive language.
Well fair enough, she is entitled to ask and receive that.
But after making several posts on her site which did not contain bad language, strongly worded yes, they were all made under my own ID and guess what? Because they disagreed with her and pointed out several things, each and every one of them were removed.
So much for free speech then eh?
However, I have worked out that basically you have to have to follow this kind of criteria for posting on Alsa3bellies site;
1) That you never ever on any account criticize Portugal or the PJ
2) Always criticize the McCann's and remember to include accusations of a blood curdling killing nature and present them as fact (2345 is a good example to follow)
3) Remember to include at least one fawning Alsa sentence in every post
4) That you on every occasion agree with Alsa3bellies 100% (or around 99%)
5) Always include some Rosiepops insulting and baiting.
Do all of this and your post has a good chance of staying.
