Misplaced trust led to Madeleine's betrayal

This article goes on from that which we were discussing yesterday, thanks Tinks.

Terrible things happen, but we trust they are not going to happen to us.
That is one of the reasons why we continue to go out in the world with hope and confidence, and to encourage our children, and others, to do the same. In the dark times, it seems foolish and utterly absurd that we do. Yet it remains an unquenchable part of human nature to trust in the good disposition of others, to rely on their sense of morality and tacit concern. It is this web of mutual reliance and good citizenship that keeps the civilised world turning; the belief in the comfort of strangers and the inherent goodness of others are the hem stitches in the fabric of society.

We trust that the teachers taking their pupils on a canoeing trip will return home without drowning half their charges. We trust that the coach driver won't take the wet bend at 80mph because he is running late, or that the Roman Catholic priest won't sleep with the vulnerable immigrant. We trust that the pilot isn't drunk, the doctor is not distracted and that the caretaker in charge of the school is not Ian Huntley. But somehow we do it again and again; we make a leap of faith that is against rational calculation, but is part of the warmth of humanity, the excitement of life. We are idiots, of course. For there is an increasing chance these days that something awful will happen, and the brittle threads of our trust will be snapped, like the bars on a cage of spun sugar.

Gerry and Kate McCann had every reason to trust that their daughter Madeleine would be safe in their holiday complex. They chose their resort with care, they spent wisely. Then when the unthinkable happened, and their three-year-old daughter was snatched from her bed and spirited away into the warm night, as seems increasingly likely, they had every reason to trust that the Portuguese police would do everything to help bring her back to safety.

Yet with the best will in the world, it is becoming obvious that this has not happened. Even if one factors in cultural differences and the inexplicable burden of the Portuguese secrecy of justice law, which prohibits even the parents of the missing being given details of evidence collected, it is clear that the police operation has been flawed and flat-footed from the start.

I should point out that I write this as the daughter, sister and niece of policemen. So I'm not predisposed to blame the cops for everything. Nevertheless, there seems to have been unforgivable lapses of protocol and procedure in this case, and there have been times when it has seemed that the local police can't be trusted to dish out a parking ticket properly, let alone find a child on the southern tip of Europe.

All through the long, dread days since Madeleine disappeared, it seemed that the silence of the Portuguese sleuths was because they had definite leads, a game plan, perhaps even a lonely house surrounded by surveillance teams armed to the teeth.

Yet as time moves on, this appears not to be the case. At a belated and chaotic press conference on Monday, the police were, if anything, belligerent instead of supportive, with an uncomfortable whisper of southern Mediterranean machismo sweeping through their statements and body language. "We are not magicians," said Olegario Sousa, the officer leading the investigation. No, senhor, but perhaps you are clowns instead.

Sousa's insensitive remark followed days of chaos. Until yesterday morning, news crews were filing reports uncomfortably close to the McCanns' apartment, further tainting a crime scene that had already been catastrophically contaminated. Police who were supposed to be patrolling the Portuguese/Spanish border exits were filmed taking refuge from the rain in their squad cars, while ignoring the vans with blacked out windows, lorries and legions of cars that hurtled past.

And what privacy law prevented authorities from papering the entire Algarve with posters of Madeleine, or releasing important details, such as the pyjamas she was last seen in, not to mention properly co-ordinating the well-meaning but haphazard public search in the days following the child's disappearance?

The McCanns trusted the police to do all they could in the search for their daughter, while it is their agony that she trusted them to keep her safe. As vigils and prayer meetings are held in her honour, a long shadow is cast over the summer to come, and on millions of forthcoming family holidays. We hope for the best, but fear the worst, as various reports describe suspects to be a dark-skinned man, a British man, a man with a bald spot. Who can we trust now, on either side of the law?

Diane,

I really don't know how Irina came up with that one...Her posts are usually pretty nonsensical.

In normal circumstances I would feel mean for picking on her english, but since she uses all the english she has to attack the McCann's pretty viciously...

She is fair game.

I did ask her where the goat was, but Viv deleted everything.

Diane,

My views exactly.

The pj should not allow their reputation to be drawn further into disprepute, but should admit their shortcomings and acknowledge that they made huge fundamental mistakes, from the outset.

Unless and until they swallow that pill, they will be ridiculed the world over for their Inspector Clouseau approach.

Re: Shannon case.
I would not blame the woman who has 6 kids to manage. Shannon's mother does what she knew was the best, without any apparent help. Kids not always right, when blaming parents for their problems - is complicated issue. I hope police will understand that.
But I believe it is impossible in modern divided society for one woman to bring up 6 children to full satisfaction of everyone. Shannon seems to be a good kid, thanks to her mother. If she has a problem with the step father, it could be either his or her fault.

The uncle she runs away to may be a mess, but I believe it is unrelated to Shannon’s case. Hope police will not make him escape goat.

it sounds like one of those mad Babel fish translations.

How on earth can he be made a scapegoat anyway? He was found with Shannon in his flat!

This woman Irina has been one of the worse McCann bashers around and has said some dreadful things about them leaving their children in bed asleep and eating 89 steps away.

yet she says Karen Matthews mother is doing a good job when she allows her little 9 year old girl to walk home alone half a mile, with wet hair on a freezing cold, dark foggy afternoon in February and if reports are true she did not report Shannon missing until 7 pm, despite knowing that Shannon was let out of school at around 3.20 pm.

I am not having a pop at Shannon's mother, but why is it OK for her to do this and the McCann's be damned to hell for being just 89 steps away and to all intents and purposes Madeleine was safely tucked up in her bed asleep!

chinadoll said...

ST,

Well, I am totally lost.

What was she hiding?

Tell her to look in the bottom of her parrots cage - that is where all her answers lie.

Rosie,

I don't know, I have stopped trying to make sense of Irina's ramblings. She is as bad as 2345 at times.

Viv and co hate the McCann's full stop. They will not listen to any reasoning on this or any evidence put to them.

I don't think they even care if they are innocent or not. The whole site is about bashing them.

China,
I think Viv's inspiration comes directly from the bottom of the parrot's cage.

Rosie, China ans ST

I dont blame Shannon's mother or Kate for the predicaments that their daughters ended up in. But I agree that anyone laying blame on Kate but not on Shannon's mum or vice versa is being ridiculous and hypocritical. Shannon's mum thought that Shannon was safe in her own neighbourhood, Kate thought Madeleine was safe in her bed. Neither threw their children to the wall.

And the guilty ones are the abductors. And the only scape goats in either of these stories are the McCanns. May have to include Murat in that, as he may be innocent as well.

dianeh said...

Good night to you all, sleep well.

Rosiepops said...

Diane and St

that is so true.

If people can look at Shannon's mum and understand this, then by the same token they should be able to understand the McCann's.

But I believe they do not want to understand, it has gone way beyond understanding, it is all a game and about winning to some, they have totally lost site of the fact that a little girl at the centre of this mess has disappeared and her abductors are getting away with it, thanks to the West Yorkshire police, Shannon's abductor is behind bars!

Good night all see you tomorrow night take care xxx

Thanks St I will take a look now.

Goodnight Rosiepops and ST,

Diane,

Once again, you fight like with like and quite rightly say, as most on this blog have done, that the real criminal is the child abductor/baby snatcher.

I cannot believe that certain persons wish to excuse the pervert that snatched this baby from her bed and chose to blame the parents for her plight.

What sort of twisted individuals are they?

I can only assume that they live in a twilight world and cannot come to terms with the evil scumbags that pervade this planet.

Thank you Diane, for your thought provoking posts, they are so appreciated.

Okay everyone - what went on with Gina??

Went over to the other blog and she made some comment thanking Diane for her post - but did not want to join our blog.

Yesterday, it was Gina I had a discord with; today is was Bianca - can Clawdia be tomorrow? Bring it on.

Oh, yep, the time before that it was Viv/Felicity. Some people have all the luck and obviously it's not ME.

Reading about the goat and my family is ready to commit me as I am giggling.

Are the PJ's now looking for an escaped goat????

dianeh said...

Calcite

The goat.

If you go to SuperTroll's blog, you will see the comment about the escaped goat.

It is actually Irina's comment (English not first language and I thought a good try but funny anyway).

And I had quite a few giggles as we were making those posts today.

dianeh said...

Calcite

Irina was referring to the man who abducted Shannon as being made a scapegoat but she wrote 'escaped goat'.

Not bad, just started giggling again. I love this comment. Irina is probably upset with us for picking on her English but you know this is truly funny. LGC (who is now saying he is a comedy writer) couldnt have written anything this funny. Irina should be proud of this one.

calcite51 said...

Diane - I did read ST's explanation of the goat and then it made sense - I thought it was really, really funny. Loved your comments - they were great.

I felt like I had gone through a battle when I left this morning. I don't remember Bianca from DE. I remember Alsabella, Dr. Val, Rothymere, Laz (where is he by the way?), Doby (kinda), Kodiak, you of course, mum21, mendz, rosiepops, helen, - I don't think I tango with her before this a.m.

calcite51 said...

I am now going to sign off because my daughter thinks it's her time for the computer. So, adieu to you Diane - have a good night. Until tomorrow.

dianeh said...

Question for the blog.

Where is Lazarus? He isnt lurking around under another name is he.

Just been over the A's blog. I know I said I wouldnt but I had to leave Gina a message.

Nothing has changed since I was last there. Still talking about non existent evidence as though it exists. Still talking about how the McCanns acted proves they are quilty of something. You know the usual. And of course how wonderful Murat is and completely innocent. And still insisting that the PJ have done their job properly. Almost forgot, the McCanns are not a 'regular' couple (????? know idea what that means as they are middle class not upper class) and the British Govt is indeed interfering in the case.

Let me be clear to the members of A's blog that come here. There is no Govt conspiracy, there is no conspiracy of silence, there is no conspiracy of anything, there is also no evidence to support your non abduction theories, there is no evidence to prove Madeleine is dead. If there was, then rest assured, the McCanns would have been arrested and charged.

There is a little girl missing and a police force that cannot find her and allegedly stopped looking for her without any evidence that she is dead.

That about does it.
