Madeleine McCann: Apologies through the ages

Last Updated: 2:54am GMT 20/03/2008
From hoaxes to errors of judgment, the front-page apologies in the Daily Star and the Daily Express today are the latest in a long history of expressions of regret by newspapers.

In 1887, The Times published a reproduction of a letter, apparently signed by the Irish parliamentarian Charles Stewart Parnell, linking him with the 1882 Phoenix Park Murders, the name given to the assassination of the British secretary for Ireland, and his undersecretary, in Phoenix Park, Dublin. A special commission found that the letter had been forged and The Times had to eat humble pie.

The front-page apologies are the latest in a long and inglorious tradition of newspaper retractions.

The 19th century artist Edward Burne-Jones is said to have brought a newspaper apology from the US to show his friend Lady Horner of Mells. It read: "Instead of being arrested as we stated, for kicking his wife down a flight of stairs, and hurling a lighted kerosene lamp after her, the Rev James P Wellman died unmarried four years ago."

In 2003 the Daily Telegraph in Sydney, Australia, published the following apology: "The Daily Telegraph reported yesterday that the English rugby team was boring. This was incorrect. The entire country of England is boring. The Daily Telegraph wishes to apologise for this error."

In May 2004, the New York Times apologised in an editorial to its readers for misleading them about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. The paper, widely considered the most influential in America, confessed that the US government urged it to carry unfounded claims to justify the war. The editorial admitted coverage "was not as rigorous as it should have been".

In the same month, the Daily Mirror in the UK isssued a front-page apology declaring "Sorry .. We Were Hoaxed" for printing faked pictures of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi. The apology was followed with a pledge by the paper to donate all money made from the sale of the pictures to charity.

In July that year, The Sun newspaper apologised for making "the most terrible mistake in its history" over the 1989 Hillsborough stadium tragedy, saying it was "truly sorry". It said that by making "grave and untrue allegations" about the behaviour of Liverpool fans during the Hillsborough disaster, it had enraged the city.

In February 2006 a full-page apology in Arabic by Jyllands-Posten, the Danish paper that first commissioned works such as a caricature of the Prophet Mohammed with a bomb-shaped turban, was published in newspapers in Saudi Arabia.

"Allow me in the name of Jyllands-Posten to apologise for what happened and declare my strong condemnation of any step that attacks specific religions, ethnic groups and peoples.

"I hope that with this I have removed the misunderstanding," wrote Carsten Juste, the editor of Jyllands-Posten. The apology was not enough to stop worldwide unrest, including attacks by extremists on churches in Africa and Pakistan as well as the US Embassy in Indonesia.

The media is hardly a branch full of the brightest buttons, is it? They just don't seem to learn! Especially in today's Britain and US of suing everyone, you'd think they'd be a bit more careful! Hopefully, a more responsible journalism will be the consequence of this.

Morning Sass

did you get my email?

Hypocrites said...

Guten Morgen Sass -- or isn't it Gruss Gott where you are? And hi too to Rosie. Good articles both.

The papers are brighter than it might appear. They take a calculated risk that increased circulation will pay for any libel suits. It paid off for them this time didn't it?

So we can expect to see more of the same ad infinitum.

I see that the apology is front page again today (part of the deal?) but can't find any comments or even a subsidiary article.

Rosiepops said...

Morning people as a few of you may already know the DX angered me so much yesterday that I decided to let them and a couple of others have it with both barrels. Six months of suppressed anger I think.

Yesterday in the High Court the DX were made to pay the McCann's £550.000 in libel damages and were forced to print an unprecedented front page public apology to them.

Yet last night unbelievably they decided to allow a HYS forum, open to all the usual suspects to hurl and throw libellous abuse at them, I thought this was despicable and have told them so.

To anyone who thinks I have lost my mind, I haven't, I took this opportunity to try and deflect comments away from the McCann's and towards me.
I knew this would lead to my account being suspended, but what the heck, I did it anyway and then wrote to the DX told them exactly what I thought of them and asked them to suspend my account.

Here is a copy of the email I sent the DX;

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am writing to ask you to remove my account from the Daily Express HYS.
I have never been more disgusted in my life at the way your paper and to be fair other papers too have treated the McCann's, I no longer wish to be a part of this system of abuse.
Not content with being in the High Court yesterday, you felt you had to offer another HYS forum up for these people to be abused and I think this is disgusting.
Also over the past 6 months you know I was personally abused attacked and called the most filthiest of names on your forum and you let those posts stand and yet threatened me with taking my account away if I defended myself.
You gagged me and allowed others to abuse me and I think that is despicable.
I note that you did this to certain other people to, strange that it was always the people that stood up for the McCann's that received this kind of abuse.
Thanks but I do not like being called a prostitute, tart, highway whore, paedophile or all the rest of it on your HYS forum and not be able to defend myself because you threatened to take my account away if I did.
I do not know what your game was on there but it felt like you were using and abusing those decent regular posters on all sides for your own end game and that was disgusting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I think it is past time that we as decent people accepted this kind of behaviour. I think we were deliberately manipulated and pitted against each other in this HYS arena/forum.

Were we part of their plan to abuse the McCann's?

I do not know but it seems like it, why else did they allow that disgusting HYS forum yesterday?

Hypocrites said...

Rosie I admire your guts. It's been like Roman gladiators -- forced to fight to the death while the emperor (the DE) happily looks on while quaffing his wine!

Anyway, no HYS today as far as I can see.

Mandz said...

HI Girls & boys!
Well done Rosie! I hope they responded to your email. They perhaps used this to get back at the McCann’s and decent people’s views were not welcomed. Glad I was not there because these people turn my stomach they are clearly abnormal dysfunctional human beings with o in their sad little lives and this is a way to make them feel better about themselves.

Mandz said...

Dare I say it BUT have the PJ arrived YET it's now past 10 days...?????!!

Mum21 said...

Good Morning All.

Was that a joke Mandz? te he he.
It is Easter after all....and you cannot expect the PJ to work on a holiday. Not that they seem to work much anyway.

Ladies...I have managed to access the DE article and the forum.
Of course I had to add my 2 penneth worth.
Here is the link...see if it lets you in still.

Mum21 said...

Just in case they pull it again...below is my comment.

TO THE DAILY EXPRESS
20.03.08, 11:13am

May I suggest you delete this article...and the forum. Freedom of speech is a great thing...and a persons right. But libel is not a right and should be treated in the manner it deserves.
To date there has not been one shred of evidence in the public domain to support the McCann's to be guilty of harming their child. Neither do I think there ever will be.
On this forum you have allowed both Portuguese and British posters to accuse without proof the McCann's of harming Madeleine. You have allowed a British poster...namely bestrest (whom we all know is 2345...a banned poster) to constantly quote as fact the findings of forensic evidence against the McCann's.
You have allowed several Portuguese posters to accuse British posters of being liars and child neglect supporters. For a British newspaper I find this unbelievable. After all...it is we, the British that buy your newspaper and keep you all in jobs...not the Portuguese.
It is your job...as part of the British press...to uphold our values of Innocent until proven guilty.
If you cannot do this....then your newspaper is not worth the paper it is printed on.
By your own admission you have stooped to the level of the Portuguese press.
Should you want to gain credibility once more in the eyes of the British public...then I suggest you permanently delete any further HYS on the Madeleine McCann case. After all at the heart of all this...a child remains missing.

I will not be posting on this forum or any DE forum ever again.

ROSIEPOPS. Just had a look at asabellas Blog and Gina is having a go at you. There is also an interesting post by a anonymous poster condemning Cristavao's book as being untrue and farcical. Go and take a look!

Dobywallah said...

Well said Mum21, I must say the DX have let the Anti's get away with murder in the past. I do not think to go on the DX HYS these days, in fact thought all the items about Madeleine had been stopped, or are they using some other story to fulfil their depraved rantings?

Hypocrites said...

Doby, good morning, the HYS has been reinstated -- it was off earlier. And it is attached to the main McCann story or was when I was there.

Mum21 said...

Doby. There is one one the DE at the moment...but I think it will be pulled very soon.
I won't be posting on there again.

calcite51 said...

Good morning, Rosie, Sass, Tulip, mandz, mom 21 et al. Well said, Rosie and Mum - I read your comments on DE HYS. What a bunch, eh?

Mum21 said...

Morning Calcite.
I honestly do think the DE should now ban any HYS on the McCann case.
I think yesterday proved that.

calcite51 said...

Yes, mum21 - I definitely agree. The DE never learns, does it??

calcite51 said...

Are you pretty well ready for Easter,Mum21?

Mum21 said...

Calcite.
Yes I am almost ready for Easter. Not that we will be doing much. I expect my son will visit with his partner and her son. It seems next year will be more of a celebration...because they intend getting married around Easter time.
I do have loads of Easter Eggs ready and waiting though. I always buy far to many....could be so there are some over for me. te he he.

calcite51 said...

Good for you, Mum21 - where is everyone? Are they all back on the DE forum?

Mandz said...

Took this it's fun to read!!

ALSABELLA.Re your extract on ex- inspector Paulo Cristovao's book, and 'Looking out to Sea'he implies it was in the "immense Sea that the childs body was hidden" Does that mean he knows 'for a fact' that Madeleine is dead? You also say "The author does not clarify why he believes Madeleine could not be found but only gives hints, such as the One at Sea" and recognises "That this is HIS THEORY?" This is not HIS theory at all, the theory was put forward by ALROY the day after Madeleine went missing and was repeated over and over again both by him and others who shared the belief in his theory! The author of this book is simply digging up and rehashing old posts from the Daily Express HYS column! Claiming that Maddies abduction by sea is HIS theory is an act of theft! You also say Alsabella that on HIS theory about other things "such as the Circumstances Of Her Death" he does not say much, which is not surprising as nobody, not even the PJ can specifically state that Madeleine "IS DEAD". I have not read his book and on the basis of what you have described I shall be very unlikely to do so!

calcite51 said...

Mandz - where did you pick up that little gem?

Mum21 said...

I don't think so Calcite.
Perhaps they are still ambling along the M1 or M6....showing a little bit of leg.

Mum21 said...

Ladies,
The DE has pulled the article at last.
Hopefully this will be an end to it.

Poor Alsabella - she's really trying to make sure everyone wants a copy of this book - you couldn't give me a copy of this book.

I suspect if she didn't mention the book whever, wherever she can, the book would go quietly in the night.

calcite51 said...

I'm off to work - so you guys have a good day. Will look in tonight.

As for the book no chance...No doubt we will get this book is "true" "fact" from the Antihazbeens...

No I'll keep my tourist money & wont be buying crap books..

Tinkerbell43 said...

Do you think when they were looking out to sea, they saw flying pigs on the horizon.

Only an idiot would give this book any credibility.

The fact is, £550,000.00 has just CONFIRMED, the past 11 months reporting has been based on false accusations.

The Author of this latest book, is no different to the DE, there is no regard for any truth as long as the book sells and another leach on society is allowed to make money
on the back of this dear little child.

Totally without moral as are they that support it.

Have they arrived to do the so called interviews...?

Afternoon Gang
Not much time to spend on here, at the moment, but well said, Rosie and Mum,also Jane and Mandz and Christa, re the DE forum, last night.[could only get part of it,reading back, post by post, from my own].
I did not stop up,after what I wrote, but Rosie, the post you reproduced on our late night blog, which I read back, today, said it all really, about the way this poor little girl's case, has been mismanaged. If only, some decent investigative journalist, would research these grave issues, or maybe, they already are.
The British tv documentary, where the editor walked out, in protest, at the way he was having to be neutral, when, in fact, he was convinced of the McCs innocence, in her disappearance, greatly concerned me, but shortly, this is all going to be brought out.
When you get a paper like the Guardian, doing timelines and stating that on Feb 10th, the Portugese Police, admitted that they had no evidence, against this couple,it can only be a matter of time.
This public apology ,admitting lies,by the DE group of newspapers,so prominently displayed, on the front page, is pretty unique.
They had no need to do it, unless they really know that the McCs are to be cleared,as they could have simply batted on, to see if charges were laid. There was all the time in the world. They were making lots of money and could have spun it out, longer.
Yet, on March 7, lawyers acting for the Mccanns, warn they are considering action against Daily Express and the day after, the DE,scales back coverage and starts to get rid of the articles.
I never felt that there should be a HYS,either on this case, or other sensitive cases, like Shannon.
If these daily leaks of lurid tales and lies, had not been carried out, by the Portugese Police, I do not suppose that there would have been anything to say and now, it is confirmed that it was all lies.Contrast Meredith and the Italian Police,[ like ours, discreet and professional]
I did wonder, whether the last forum, was a chance for people, to get a last kick in and bolster the
DE,[even though it was a pack of lies ], or I wonder, whether they would have been testing public opinion, in some way, as what they have done,is pretty grotesque and many people, will be upset.
Will they ever be trusted again? [not that I ever did and neither do I read them ]
Mum was right re the DE forum, which,I agree, should be pulled forever.I fully support what she said.
I have never met or seen, such vindictive, hate filled people,as the ones,so called antis,on that site.
Anyways, they have left their marks behind. Many of them, have been pontificating and boasting, for months.
I do not normally rejoice in the downfall of others, but if it is true and I do not understand how, that Rat was outed, last night, I am glad, as she needs naming and shaming, with those attitudes.
We all get our come uppance, in the end and there are obviously people monitoring and looking in to these blogs and I say, Good luck to them.

melbel said...

Hi Mandz and Tinks
I read, on the parallel universe, that we are talking of April 7th, but no point in asking McCs,as they "did not answer last time"
What a lamentable state of affairs, a b.....dy disgrace.
Neither do I think this Cristov character, will get off the hook, because,as you said, he uses the name and it is easily recogisable as pertaining to Madeleine.
No doubt, the libel case will be heard in UK, as you get higher damages. That is apparently, why filmstars and people with little connection, get their cases heard here.
He may be in prison, though.
Nobody, with a shred of decency, could agree, with what he is doing.
Neither could any decent person, argue that it is wrong, because of so called, freedom of speech, for a newspaper, to apologise and pay out, for telling a pack of lies.

Meant to say, that I read of an American blog or blogger, who is so incensed with the way that this case, has been conducted, that he or she, is organising a boycott of the Portugese Tourist industry and of their goods.
We forget that this case is followed worldwide.
On DM forum, it is common to read about critical people from other countries.
How dare the Portugese posters talk about suing people critical of the PJ.
They have needed no outside help, to make themselves figures of incompetence, duplicity and ridicule.

Mandz said...

She is one bad apple! What a childish thing to say - all because I don't agree with her...in fact I was not even debating with her all I asked was for her to turn down her aggression towards others posters? Maybe Belynda can explain for her...? Maybe Belynda is the nicer side..?!! Lol..

She is a terrible busybody.

Irina is another one, who cannot stand the Brits, lamenting us for our lack of democracy.her a Russian, as well.
Used to give me nightmares, with her peering at that lamp.Could imagine her interrogating people.
Notdoc,is obsessed with Mark and Alroy.
He is too childish to be a doctor.
Hope he is not.x

Tinkerbell43 said...

Hi Melbel,

Well they're damn right I am critical of the PJ. The PJ lost total credibility with me the minute they orchestrated a vicious smear campaign against this distraught family.

Their leaks have had a direct affect on peoples lives.

At the end of the day, nothing I say against the PJ will have any detrimental affect whatsoever on their own personal lives or those of their family.

What may do however, is the alleged charges some of them are already facing, but they brought them about themselves!

Just leaving work, see u later.

Mandz and Melbel

Pratonthebeam left her own rail to who she was it is very easy to trace and she only has herself to blame. I have no pity for her, she has constantly abused and personally attacked Kate and Gerry McCann and even Clarence Mitchell's family came in for her disgusting abuse and she actually named his family and told the world on the DX HYS, where he was taking his children to a football match one weekend, have you every seen such a stupid and vindictive thing to do? I read the other day someone reckons the reason why she is so anti Gerry, is because he knocked her back when they were growing up, probably true too. Note though even she could not produce anything bad to say about him or his family.

If the person that threatened to report her to her faculty actually does it, then that is her own stupid fault for behaving like an arrogant ladette on a message board, no sympathy for her at all and I fail to see how her employers would take anything other than a dim view of her antics on the Vile blogs and on the DX over the months.

However, her real name was revealed on here yesterday and because we have to abide by the rules of Google it had to be removed.

Pity Alsabella doesn't abide by the rules, still that is for her to sort out!

Rosiepops said...

Gina

I'll write this here, no doubt you will read it, pointless writing on Casa Crud's as it will get deleted anyway can't be bothered to look at all that venom being spewed daily over there.

If I want to tell two people and the DX what i thought of them, what is it to you? Did I mention you? No I did not.

The reason I did what I did because Gina unlike you I am not a hypocrite and when I say I am going to do something, I do it. I said that I would either make myself get banned or ask the DX to suspend my account, this I have done. I said I would never post on the DX again and I will not. I say I will only post under my proper ID and I do.
I said I will not flit from board to board giving one opinion on one board and another on the other and I will not.

If I want to make an arse of myself I will, but Gina at least I am an honest arse and I do not pretend to be something I am not and my views are constant and I have the courage of my convictions.

Yesterday I decided to say what I thought of the DX for the way they have reported this story and I told it like it was.

I would not expect and neither would I want any recognition from you for what I did, who are you anyway? Just some board flitter that flits here there and everywhere, you say one thing here and receive a polite response then you go on the Highway Whore's board and run people here down.

You are inconsistent, your views are nondescript and you yourself have blown up more times than the bomb site in an army training camp, so don't come here criticizing me for doing once what you have done many times, that makes you a hypocrite.

I have taken personal abuse and been called the filthiest of names from the people you associate yourself with and yesterday I decided it was pay back time, if they don't like it, then tough tell them not to hand it out.

Bet you could not have kept quiet for six months under that kind of attack Gina, bet you could not have lasted six minutes.

The other day an anon apparently wrote you a very reasonable post and because you had no answers, you told him/her to F*** Off.

If I made myself look like an arse Gina at least I did not make myself look like a foul mouthed arse by telling Simone I did not know to F*** Off just because they held a different opinion to me.

If you got so offended by someone asking you something in a post, I wonder how you would have reacted to being called a child neglector, tart, prostitute, highway whore, paedophile, terrorist, racist, liar, it, thick, ignorant and all the rest of it, constantly virtually every day without hardly a day going by without getting insulted by every passing nut case on your side of the fence.

I know you would have blown a long time ago, which makes you a rank hypocrite.

If you have anything to say to me come here and say it, not hide behind Alsabliar's skirts.

Personally I think the majority of the people on that blog and Vile's are breathe contempt with the disgusting things they have said about a couple who are grieving the loss of their daughter. I know I would not like any of you in real life because I know I have standards and choose my friends carefully and I certainly would not choose people that would rather boot someone in the head while they are down, in preference to offering a helping hand up.

Quite honestly I find most of the views emulating from those boards to be repugnant and repulsive in the extreme and I have trouble equating those views with living breathing normal people, but that is just it isn't it, the majority over there do not seem at all normal, none of you seem to be dealing from a full deck.

The people here are warm, kind, funny and generous spirited and I feel privileged to be among them, even if it is only on a blog. We may not agree on everything, but one thing we do have in common is that we believe people are innocent until proven and none of us would dream of accusing those poor parents of the disgusting heinous and absolutely farcical things you lot do on a daily basis, making yourselves look like right plonkers in the process.

I thought it may be Alsabliar, but then thought why would she do this? so then I thought it may be Vile because I know she is really ticked off with Alsabliar opening her blog, I was told this by someone on their side of the fence, one of the more normal people!

Car belonging to Madeleine case witness destroyed in blast

By NATASHA SMITH

natasha@the-resident.com

A CAR belonging to Russian computer expert Sergei Malinka, who has been questioned by police as part of the Madeleine McCann investigation, was destroyed in an explosion in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, March 20) in Praia da Luz.

The incident is said to have taken place at around 5am next to his apartment, where the word “fala” (talk) had been written on the pavement next to the car.

Witnesses told The Resident that two cars were involved in the blast and maintain that one belonged to Malinka.

Police first interviewed Malinka on May 16, 2007, around two weeks after Madeleine McCann went missing.

Police searched the home of the IT expert, who designed a website for Robert Murat and was seen talking to Murat several times in the days after Madeleine’s disappearance. He was adamant that he was interviewed as a witness, not a suspect.

He has lived in Praia da Luz for around seven years and has always maintained he had nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

He claims he only had a professional relationship with official suspect, Robert Murat, and he has never been named as an arguido.

The Judicial Police could not confirm this morning’s blast took place but witnesses in the area have told The Resident that two cars were involved. They have also said that one of the cars belonged to Malinka.

The Resident spoke to Robert Murat, who said that he had not been told about the incident but did confirm that Malinka drove a Silver Audi, similar to the car that was torched.

“I am in England now but I am surprised that no one in Praia da Luz phoned me to tell me about it”, he said.

There will be many, who were supportive and are not fools, swallowing tales from tabloid newspapers.
People are not so daft.
The posters in the parallel universe, are not in our world.
No decent person, can deep down, feel it is right for this book to be published, for money.
Nor can a decent person think, that newspapers, caught out in lies, should not apologise.
Neither can a decent person,be so vindictive and callous, to people they do not know.
You are a shining light, in integrity, honesty and sheer decency and I salute you.

Thanks for that Christa. I printed out the cut and paste and will have to have a bash, especially as our friend,China,is popping up everywhere pasting.A proper little decorator she is !Thank you again.
Did you really cross stitch something as intricate, as your last avator ?
I keep meaning to try a beginner's one,but am blind as a bat.x

chinadoll said...

Melbel,

I read the article you mentioned about the attempted abduction of the 15yr old girl - it was in the same publication as the Malinka story.

Strange how the more negative stories are not passed on by any native posters......hmmmmm

Rosiepops said...

China

Thanks for that article, it is extremely interesting. If this does turn out to be Malinka's car, then it sounds like one or more people either know something or suspect something.

I wonder if the national press will pick this up?

Interesting too that Murat is in Britain. Didn't Alsabliar say she was coming to Britain around now? I seem to remember reading that on the DX before it went!

i wonder if they travelled on the same plane?

More importantly anyone heard anything about the PJ yet?

I know it is Easter but the British police do not do bank holiday's, especially if they have pressing work.

Hi all,

Rather the worse for wear, out to a friends birthday lunch which has only just finished!! but then you know that it is common practice for long looooooong lunches in Portugal. I will try and be coherent, can't say that about my spelling though!

Rosie,
Well said, re your post to Gina. I have not visited Alsabella's site today, but no need to as I have faith in your judgement, and it is obvious that you had a need to say it.

I think you knew from my post yesterday that I thought that we were being played, I was right. Since this site has been functioning we have welcomed posters with differing views as lon as they were not abusive, only for them to go back to other sites and malign us. Hardly fair play as most of our posts were deleted if we dared to put a point of view across.

I have held my tongue, as you obviously have, as I didn't want to be the one who vented my feelings towards Gina and maybe alienate myself from the rest of the group. For this I apologise in not having the b....s to confront her and her 'woe is me attitude'.

P.S What happened to the ignore them I do?!!!LOL

Christabel said...

Melbel,
No probs, get on with it woman lol.
No thats not the cross stitch, it is of the Gothic alphabet, not done pick of it yet.
Don't know if you have heard of Little Morton Hall in Cheshire ?
but I cross stitched a pic of that years ago, everyone thinks its a painting as it is all black and white.
Thats in pride of place down the caravan.

Rosiepops said...

Melbel

Apparently our Christabel is a dab hand with a sewing needle, I remember her saying she made all the costumes for a children's home Christmas concert.

Even this could not be left alone and Viv aka Felicity picked this up and decided to insult about it, bit Christabel and I retaliated and we got our accounts suspended.

The only good thing to come out of this was that Viv/Felicity apparently lost it with the DX and they blocked her too. she then came back as Felicity and was so repulsive that she managed to get blocked permanently under that ID too!

Some people like Christabel actually do good, some people like Felicity just talk about what the do and probably do nothing, yet feel free to criticize others who donate their time, love and patience.
Well done Christabel xxx

joanypony said...

Well said Rosiepops, it was about time someone gave the numpties a taste of their own medicine, the only thing is they are so ignorant they won't understand half of it.

When I used to read some of the comments on the DE and DS it made me feel physically sick, I just can't believe that a right minded person could think like that, but then, that's the point, they are not right minded.

Rosiepops said...

Helen,

you have just made me burst out laughing, up until last night I did ignore them but then that damned DX opened that HYS and there they all were with their disgusting accusations free to hurl them at the McCann's again, so I thought no, sometimes you have to stand up and be counted, so I did, sometimes you can't turn the other cheek. While I was at it I thought it was only fair to let Alsabliar and notdoc know what I really thought of them and their duplicitous double standards, I understand that it didn't go down too well -shame about that - who cares?

Then someone told me what Gina had written on Alsabliar's blog about me today, so I thought as I am in the mood, I would tell her what I thought of her too.

I hope you had a good looooong lunch, did you see Tubby Gonc around?

Well Helen as I said just ignore them, I do! ;-) (sometimes) x

Rosiepops said...

Hi Joany

I understand what you are saying, I honestly do not think that most of them are normal.

Hi HelenM and everyone, no my grandchildren are 22 and 14, this is a great-great niece and I am going to Inverness to see her and my elderly sister who is in a home for alzheimer sufferers. I hope she will be in a good frame of mind as I take her out for lunch, she has been everytime I have been up in the past year but you never know with alzheimers.

melbel said...

Hiya all
I agree Joany, with what you say about DE These antis are real hardline fundamentalists and not very bright, either.
They have swallowed, what has been admitted,is lies and added their own twopennyworth, with amateur interpretations of behaviour.
2345 totally denies, that any settlement happened and they go through the same old themes eg pact of silence from tapas7.
They get half baked information and take it for real.
Alsa and clawcreature, are singlehandedly destroying the Algarve tourist industry .
A poster on 3 arguidos, has stated, apparently, that Guardian is now destroying articles.
This is a pile of pants, as I read that paper, from cover to cover and they have written little, about this case, like other broadsheets and never libelled the McCs.
They are not a rich newspaper and anyhow, do not go in for libelling and defaming people.
That is what the tabloids do.

Dobywallah said...

Hi there Christabel, not had the pleasure for a long time, and Joanypony, sorry to hear about your sisters illness, Alzimers is a most awful complaint, i've never had any close dealings with sufferers but understand it really is awful for friends and relatives.

Just going off for around 50 mins, see you later x

joanypony said...

Hi Melbel.

The posters on those sites seemed to feed off each others remarks, all the awful theories, it was as thought they were trying to outdo each other. Absolute nutters!!

melbel said...

Hi Doby and Helen
Just to say hello,as I missed you.Watching a spot of tele now. take care and Christa, rosie and china and anyone, the old lass [me],forgot. x

Christabel said...

Hi Doby and Joany,

Oh my goodness I nearly wrote Derby and Joan.

Nice to speak to you Doby, as you say alzheimer's is a horrid thing to deal with.
My dad suffered with this for over 8 years, it is very hard for all the family especially the main carer.
The worst thing is them not knowing who you are, that is heartbreaking.

Dobywallah said...

Christabell. terribly sorry to hear about your Dad, I can well immagine how heartbreaking it must be not to be recognised by your own Dad, I'm really sorry. In many ways it's a cruel world isn't it!

Dobywallah said...

Sorry must go now for a little while, may be back later but not sure, if not TTFN as they say, or used to say!

joanypony said...

Hi Christabel, was watching telly.

I know what you mean about them not knowing you, luckily my sister still recognises me, but when my daughter was deteriorating in hospital over a period of 21/2 years she knew us when she first went in, then about a year later she was calling me 'dad' and dad 'mum' then a few months after that she didn't know us. When you asked it she knew who you were she would look at you and then shake her head. It was awful.

Another thing that I have thought long about over the nine years since she died, is that a nurse found her crying when she went in to her ward one day about 2 months before she died and she couldn't tell her why she was crying. That still hurts today. She was only 35 when she died.

Christabel said...

Doby,

unless you have dealt with it you cannot even begin to know what its like.

I'm ashamed to say I never believed in euthanasia, but seeing him like he was for the last 2 years, it would have been a blessing for him.
If he had known what he was like and how acted, he would have ended it himself.
He was a proper gentleman and never went anywhere unless he was immaculately dressed without a hair out of place.
Not nice to speak about on a blog really.
I will leave it on a while and then remove it.

Christabel said...

Joany,

really feel for you, its bad enough loosing a parent, don't know how I would cope loosing a child.

We were lucky in a way if you can call it that, most of us all have the same sense of humour and were told to laugh with dad about it, some things you could laugh at but others were hearbreaking.
I would give a lot more detail but this is not the place for that.

joanypony said...

Christabel, I have the consolation of my grand-daughter, Samantha, now living in a flat round the corner from me, took her into stay with me when things were not working out at home after her father married again. She came in when she was 17, now 22 and a credit to us, she is in her last year of psychiatric nursing at Robert Gordon's University. Dad doesn't even phone to see how she is getting on, but she knows we care and love her very much.

You have done your best by your dad and that is all we can do for the people we love.

chinadoll said...

Joanypony,
I am so sorry to hear of your personal tragedy and hope you have so many happy memories to reflect on too. x

Christabel,
You too darling. x

Christabel said...

Joany,
I'm Glad things worked out for your granddaughter.
My mom has never really recovered from looking after dad for so long and loosing him.
She has just turned 85, but her health is not brilliant, but her sense of humour is fantastic.
Daren't print it though lol !

chinadoll said...

Well Madam Rosiepops,

I see you had a very busy evening last night - discharging your double barrelled shotgun over on the DX !!! lol.

Well, I fully understand and am glad that you got that off your chest. Sometimes, that is the only thing to do, even though, under normal circumstances, it goes against the grain.

joanypony said...

Christabel, I too have a wicked sense of humour and that is what helps to get you through lots of trials and tribulations.

Here's a joke:

Very old couple sitting by the fireside, husband says to wife 'What ever happened to our sexual realtions?' Wife says 'Forget about them, we never even got a Christmas card from them this year.'!!!!!

Christabel said...

China,
thank you.

Must tell you one funny event with dad a few weeks before he passed away.

He had £2.86 in his pocket, and kept asking me to count it for him.
I did this about 2 dozen times, then said tell you what dad, give me the change and I'll give you a £1 coin to make you £3( less to count I thought).
Did the swap, and gave it him back, he went ape, told mom I had nicked his money.Mom was in stitches.
I had to give it him back though and he was content with that.
I carried on counting lol !

joanypony said...

Sorry Chinadoll forgot to say hi and thanks.

chinadoll said...

Christabel,

Bless him.

It's lovely that reflections like that soon spring to mind and put a smile on your face (well it did mine)

It is good to focus on the positive memories.

Rosiepops said...

Just been reading the back posts and I have to say that I am so glad and so proud that we have people like you here with us. I think it is your deeply personal experiences in life that help make you the people you are and why you can offer comfort to others and why you know that for all of it, we are all human and all fallible in the end.
I spent my entire working life caring for others, yet nothing prepared me for when my own dear mother did not recognise me, I had to leave go out and cry it out and then return and try to carry on as if nothing had happened.
yet my dear daughter was once sitting with her nan and suddenly my mum had a lucid moment and she reached out and touched my daughter's face and said , you're my angel and then she was gone again and there were many such times, the only thing I consoled myself with that where ever she was she seemed happy enough and seemed oblivious to anything else, but as Christabel said we have happy times and funny times to remember and of course our memories. In time the pain fades and the good memories take over.

Joany, I have no idea how on earth you coped and my love goes out to you, you too Christabel.

Christabel said...

Rosie,
Thanks for that, shall I remove the posts ?

I aways say, care for others as you would like to be cared for !

Evening Rosiepops and thanks.

I am not religious, don't believe there is a superior being.

You are what you are and you do the best you can.

I don't know how or why but in times of crisis I am very strong. I always feel that if someone is depending on you you cannot go to pieces, you have to be there for them.

Never knew that until my mum died suddenly at 60 and my dad was just a quivering jelly, so I had to stay strong for him. You surprise yourself sometimes!!

Signing off now. On holiday until 7th April - long lie tomorrow!

Thanks China,

Christabel, only remove them of you feel you want to, I certainly do not think they do anyone any harm to realise that they are dealing with real people on these blogs!

Also it may help to make people realise that the McCann's are real human beings too and that all this is about a little girl who is still missing from home.

Where is she? What have the PJ done today to find her? When did the PJ give up looking for her?

chinadoll said...

Hi there Janegt,

That is funny - you tucking into a curry tonight, as I made a Chilli tonight (for tomorrow) after constantly reading references to Chill con carne from you and others on here.

We just had SOW tonight.

Are you doing anything with your time apart from going to see your sister? Anything planned?

The Candy Floss blog really sucks said...

Hiya China

The hoover bag jokes came from the fact that as my dad has trouble walking (and as when he could walk better he sometimes had really bad present ideas for my mum) I have been doing his present buying for different occasions for my mum.

I have had to dictate a love note down the phone for my mum to a florist, today I had to buy a "for my wife on our anniversary" card, etc. Dad loves practical presents for people and the joke was that he would have been fine with me gift-wrapping hoover bags for my mum!

chinadoll said...

Chinadoll, tell me, in your opinion do women think more of their Dads than their Mums or the other way round? I'm almost sure most fellas have a close bond with their Mums but how about Dads, is it the same with with women and their Dads? Just curious, I have my own feelings about this!

What can I say? Our experiences are unique and so very very complicated.

I have never applied the gender test to my parent, or, indeed to my friends or anyone else. I tend to respond to the individual, regardless of gender or background.

Even when I stumble across an issue with someone, I try not to categorise them.

Sorry, not meaning to preach, but my parents are equally responsible for my being here and I have always tried not to differentiate between them.

I definitely used to be closer to my dad when I was living at home, now, however, it's equal. I can tell my dad more stuff - I realised that after I went to the row of small shops near where we used to live in the south-east and the shopkeepers were all asking me about the man I had just met. I had told only my mum in Britain so it was pretty obvious who was gassing!

When I tell dad something I know he won't tell anyone if I ask him not to.

ROSIEPOPS You didn't scare me, I knew what mode you were in quite clearly.......!!!!!

Sass Love the egg what's in it for the Easter Gift, mini choccie hoover bags????

Hi DOBY.......Folks used to say the girl liked the Dad, Dad the girl. And Mum the boy, and boy the Mum.

I don't hold with that. Depends on the empathy with one another.

Rosiepop's crystal ball certainly it is 2345 engulfed in her dna evidence and accidentally in the science lab ballooned her test tube right round her ignorant fat head.

Chinadoll, sorry if I brought up a rather tactless subject, it was just out of interest, like I said, looking at it from the childrens point of view the sons seem to have that close bond with their mothers but at the same time enjoy being a mans man with their dads. Personally I cried when when my Dad died and cried equally when my Mum died, so i guess that's the answer, we love both equally but in different ways and for different reasons!

I would like to say also I emailed the Daily Express or is it Daily Supress ....early hours of this morning to say ....

Dear Editor

I know your HYS on Madeleine McCann's disappearance was an 'experiment'. As it clearly has not worked, why are you perpetrating this calamity for all to see. How much more money have you in reserve from sales to pay out??????

..........

This will be put out by lecturers in Psychiatry and Psychology for years........what fodder they have.

Well said Doby,

I could not have put it better.

Doby

I don't know what 2345 looks like but I know where she lives, (Mars) definitely not on this planet anyway!

Janegt, perfect description of Rosie's ball, I thought it just had a look of her. Come to think of it, that's where I'd like to see her in an inflated baloon soaring off into the blue or in a glass ball floating down the Mersey and out to sea!

Doby,

I was the opposite and closer to mom.
I think the main reason was, if I was late getting in 10.01 pm instead of 10pm, dad would take my key off me.
Mom would give me hers then get mine back from dad.
I was married about 5 years before he knew about this and he said you pair of buggers, are out of the same mould

The Candy Floss blog really sucks said...

Completely knackered! Going to bed - am a lightweight when I am at home with mum and dad because I spend far more time running round like a fly with a blue posterior! Have a nice chat - enjoy the rest of the evening!
