Kate and Gerry McCann have urged Portuguese police to investigate the movements of a suspected Spanish paedophile on the day their daughter vanished to see if there is any link to her disappearance.
The 52-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of killing five-year-old Mari Luz Cortes, who went missing just across the border from where Madeleine disappeared in the Algarve on May 3 last year.
The first anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance is approaching
Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley in Leicestershire, joined forces with Mari Luz’s family to try and track down the two girls, printing thousands of posters bearing both their faces and distributing them across the Iberian Peninsula.
But while the body of Mari Luz, who went missing after going out to buy sweets on January 13, was found in an estuary in the Spanish border town of Huelva on March 7, there has been no trace of Madeleine.
The McCann’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell said it was important to establish if there was any connection to the missing British four-year-old, who vanished from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz as her parents dined nearby.
“We hope the Portuguese police will be liaising with the Spanish police to establish this man’s movements around the time Madeleine disappeared,”
he said.
“We have no indication there is a direct link between the two cases.
“But given the proximity of the places Madeleine and Mari Luz disappeared from and the similarity in their ages, we believe it’s important the Portuguese police make absolutely sure there’s no connection now there’s been an arrest.”
The man being held by Spanish police is reported to have convictions for child abuse and indecent assault on minors and is already said to have confessed to Mari Luz’s murder.
Although his name has not been released by police, Spanish TV station Telecinco named him as Santiago del Valle Garcia.
His sister, named locally as Rosa, and his wife, named locally as Isabel, were also arrested - although one of the women is thought to have been released early Wednesday morning.
All three were detained in a rented house in Cuenca, an hour and a half’s drive south of Madrid.
The arrested man is a former neighbour of Mari Luz’s family and lived less than 100 yards from her parents Juan Jose and Irene on the route she would have taken as she returned from the local sweet shop.
He had been questioned already by police after causing suspicion by leaving Huelva the day after Mari Luz disappeared.
Shortly after the arrest, Mr Cortes said:
“This comes as no surprise to me. We know it’s him.”

Talking about an avalanche that happened in Austria, where some scientists put themselves into the middle of it, near the Swiss border in 1999. I think, amazing programme and a bit scary!
They were trying to study it, something about powder snow.
they built a concrete bunker in the snow and filled it with their equipment and then they deliberated set the avalanche off, but hey got more than they bargained for.
The avalanche was massive and the snow got into the bunker by ripping the door off, something about a saltation layer which helped the avalanche.

It's not even a case of repeating, it's a case of acting normally here then running off and saying how awful we are!
I don't know the ins and outs of it, but I am wondering just what constitutes as a suspicious death or abductions in Portugal?
This woman was only about 40 and she was fund dead outside her home with blood around, yet seems to me that the PJ did not call in a coroner but just covered her with a sheet, while they apparently said there were no suspicious circumstances.
The reason she dies was because she was mentally impaired and had a car accident two days earlier?
Just seems t me that all the PJ want to do is as least as possible! Anyone dying or disappearing is an annoyance.
I know Sass...and I cannot understand why she does it. I have always liked Gina...that is why I offered to help her today.
I think she is trying to keep up with the big boys...if you know what I mean.

Interesting that Melbel didnt post on the DX but I will agree with her that it is much more pleasant (wrote pleasanter but then realised it isnt even a word) on this blog.
I alwasy used to get into fights with that first grade tosser Newton from London. He was a braggart (said one night he had inside info that Obama had won New Hampshire, even after Rothaymere said that she was watching it live and he hadnt, and then Obama didnt win it) and then would get very abusive. I have often wondered if he is one of the abusive anon's that turns up from time to time. It would be just his style, very childish and full of his own self importance. But then that makes him very hard to distinguish from some of the other anti's, doesnt it.

Just saw your post. I hope your sick kids are not too much of a handful today. I feel like moving out when my two are sick at the same time. 2 & 3 yo, and very demanding when sick. Especially little boy, as he hardly ever gets sick. Little girl is sick quite a lot but luckily just lays around the house and is happy to just watch tv. But she gets spikes in temperature, had trouble breathing. When she is sick, I have to sleep with her to keep an eye on her.

Here is my dog Muffy, the one who is sick. She is a bit better but still wonky on her feet. She is eating now but I am very worried about her balance. The vet said to give it a bit longer, as she must be feeling better since she is eating.

I work on a voluntary basis at the dogs' home here. There are three dogs I take out regularly. When I got back from GB the Dalmation cross had been given a new home. He was a sweet little dog, but as he was older I didn't think he had much chance of a new home - an older man took him home as he didn't have the energy for a puppy.
When I brought the puppy back (she's the funniest little thing - today's "thang" was to run around in circles really fast and then attack my arm! She's about 9 months old, so it's normal) I was told that a couple had come to see her as they thought they might like to take her home. So I gave her a good grooming (exercise in futility as she tried to eat the brush!) to make her look even prettier for her visitors! Will find out what happened next time I go. I am running out of dogs! They are all going to new homes!
Unfortunately dogs are coming in all the time. Some of them are in such a bad state. One little dog had been there a couple of days and as soon as a dog walker came, pulled them to a car and sat next to it because he wanted to go home. That made me howl - poor little homesick dog.
Anyway I'm really off now - don't forget to vote now!

When this blog first started and I was trying to join, it was so well vetted and secretive, that it seemed ok to comment on the rest of you, who chose to be exposed and in the open.
I admit, that I posted once on your site in the early days (as an anon) and that was in response to your letter to Mrs Healey.
Regardless of past disputes, I have always felt able to engage in discussion with you, but, that, alas, really had a bad impact on me.
I like to call in now and then and say 'hello to dear Athena'
I dearly hope, that when you return, you will attempt to understand our side better and no doubt, in return, we will do the same.
I was touched by your humanity today, as displayed in your post and realised that we all have more in common, than we realised.
