Two more held in Shannon Matthews case

Police investigating the alleged kidnap of nine-year-old Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, yesterday arrested the mother and sister of the schoolgirl's stepfather.

Detectives are questioning 49-year-old Alice Meehan on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice and 25-year-old Amanda Hyett about allegations that she assisted an offender.

Shannon's stepfather, Craig Meehan, a 22-year-old supermarket fishmonger, has been remanded in custody charged with nine offences of possessing indecent images of children on his computer. None were of members of the Matthews family.

The latest arrests bring the number of members of the extended family in custody to four, as 60 detectives try to unravel events surrounding Shannon's disappearance for 24 days in February and March. She was found hidden in the storage compartment of a bed at the flat of Meehan's uncle Michael Donovan, a 32-year-old computer operator who lives just over a mile from Shannon's home in Dewsbury Moor.

Donovan is accused of abducting Shannon and holding her against her will. The schoolgirl is in the protective care of the local Kirklees council's social services department, but her brother, sister and stepsister are staying with her mother, 32-year-old Karen Matthews.

Amanda Hyett and her 35-year-old husband Neil live next door to Shannon's house on the Dewsbury Moor council estate. Alice Meehan is Craig Meehan's mother and Donovan's older sister. Shannon is being interviewed by specially trained detectives.

The number to be interviewed keeps growing. I have read that PJ will only sit in on Tapas group questioning. The rest will be done by British police alone.
Also read that due to nature of questioning that PJ have requested that British police keep all details secret. Why am I not surprised?

However, the British police officers will know what is going on from these interviews. I wonder if they will keep quiet if they think the PJ are way off track.

Just looking in prior to bed - have been peeking throughout day, but unable to post.

Personally, I do not think we should be discussing Shannon and her family.

Clearly, this stage of the investigation, is crucial and the rumour mill/general opinion/speculation, should not be encouraged.

Hence, I have no comment to make on todays topic.

As for what question I would like to ask the pj ?

Why on Gods earth have you refused each and every offer of an Independent Outside Investigation, what exactly is being covered up here - what do you have to hide?

Hi China

Im still here, just had to run off as little boy had escaped into the front yard (someone left gate open from front verandah) and I found him alternatively filling up the dogs food tub (dry food) with sand and eating said dog food.

And when I picked him up, I got the biggest hug. Probably just distracting me from giving him a big smack. Well it worked. Poor dogs have to put up with sand in their dry food now for a few weeks.

I also havent commented on Shannon's case today, as I agree there isnt enough to go on. I am taking a wait and see approach as I said yesterday, after I slipped up and posted an opinion when I said I wouldnt.

Diane,

I would feel like a down right hypocrite, to offer an opinion/comment on this case.

It certainly looks cut and dried, but, often, matters are more complex than they seem.

I think this is where the pj slipped up - taking the text book route in search for a solution.

No matter what diplomas you have, they can never and will never be a substitute for experience.

Thank Goodness Kate and Gerry will not give up, arguidos or non arguidos - the heat will always be focused on Portugal and the search for Madeleine.

I will bid you goodnight.

Make the most of the little ones..........they soon grow up lol

Just read latest comments on Joanna Morais blog.

Another bunch of demented lunatics that are unable to separate fact from fiction. Cant seem to understand that 'suspect' doesnt equate to 'guilt' and that the suspect status has yet to produce and results.

Also, seem to think that because the McCanns left children alone, then they should have no input to standardisation laws relating to missing children.

Get in the real world and use your brains FGS. There is no proof of the death of Madeleine, nothing to implicate the parents. The majority of people do not despise them, only twisted people like those that post on Vile's site and Joanna's. Most people feel for the McCanns and I for one feel sure that if the McCanns werent attending the conference, then we wouldnt even know it was on. So it has generated a lot of publicity and put the agenda for the introduction of an 'Amber' alert system well and truly into the spotlight.

But the morons are unable to see that. They let their own personal prejudice blind them to the benefits of such publicity. Benefits that will help other abducted children.

China

On Shannon, the only thing I know for sure is that she was at her step uncles place when the police found her. Therefore he is most likely guilty of abduction.

But as to whether any one else was involved, to what extent, whether it was a plot for money, or if some family members knew or suspected, we will just have to wait and see.

Also, as to where the children will be safe, is up to Child Services, not the general public and I hope that the press stops commenting on that personal stuff, as it is harmful to the children. It is also strictly private.

Reading the other blog - some of the posters are upset with the BRITISH police for guess what? Guess what could possibly upset these people?

According to some of the posters, the British Police have leaked the information by naming the PJ's coming from Portugal; the hotel they will be staying in; the questions that will be asked of the Tapas 7 - and the times, locations, etc. of the interviews.

After all the leaks the PJ's gave up to the tabloids - all I can say is, Revenge is sweet. I really don't think these posters have a clue and I can't see the British Police doing this but oh, well...

I think some posters are panicking and coming up with excuses why this investigation will not result in charges being laid against the Mccanns.

Hi Calcite

The other day they were complaining that the Leic police had leaked info as well, as to what the actual questions were.

So of course, this has been forwarded to the Leic police for them to investigate whether or not this so called leak even exists. I suspect, doesnt exist.

And the interveiws here are also covered under the Portugese secrecy laws. What a joke!!! Of course, if the PJ dont like what happens here, they will no doubt spring another leak or two.

Thing is, if there is nothing resulting from these interviews, or if evidence comes forward indicating an abduction, then I wonder if the British police will keep it to themselves. They may for a while but if not acted on, I doubt they will remain silent. Of course, that is assuming that the 25, 30 or 50 witnesses to be interviewed actually have anything to say. And I think they will, or else why would K & G asked for them to be interviewed.

All getting very very interesting.

The posters on the 'other' blogs are a bunch of hypocrites. There is not enough room on this blog for me to list the number of times they have been hypocritical regarding the actions of K & G when compared to the beloved PJ, Murat, Christovoa, etc. And of course, then we have the contradictions in their own theories. You know even if they believe themselves to be correct about K & G, they cant all be correct because they cant even agree on a decent scenario for what actually happened. So at least some, if not all of them are in for a big fall, when they discover that they were in fact very very wrong about the McCanns and the PJ's investigation. A few will be hanging their heads in shame. And there are the few who dont know the meaning of the word shame.
