How the McCann case highlights our true attitude towards EU membership

10th September 2007

The Madeleine McCann case highlights our true attitude towards membership of the European Union.

We think: "Why can't they get on top of this investigation?" They think: "Why don't they take their problems elsewhere and not destroy our tourist industry with their paedophile claims?"
We accept reluctantly a system imposed on us by politicians who concealed the loss of sovereignty it entailed, but Europe's still a them versus us affair.

Gordon Brown knows he'd have difficulty getting the new EU 'treaty' approved in a British referendum. That's why he's reluctant to have one.

Imagine how much more difficult it would be if the Portuguese drag Gerry and Kate McCann back to Praia da Luz and charge them with manslaughter.

For true believers in the EU, the investigation into a missing child should proceed in Praia da Luz in the same way it would in Pontypool. But it doesn't.

The Portuguese have their own way of doing things. And we appear to have no confidence in them. We'd prefer Madeleine's disappearance on May 3 to be investigated by British methods.
For instance, the crime scene - a holiday apartment - sealed and searched minutely, not given a once-over, with people tramping in and out, and afterwards re-let to holidaymakers.
Madeleine's aunt, Philomena McCann, said yesterday: "The crime scene was completely desecrated.

"Literally hundreds of people went into that apartment after Madeleine was abducted. It was at least two days before any fingerprinting was done."

The Portuguese investigation was agonisingly slow. British reporters on the scene described police activity as leisurely to non-existent. It's accepted here that the first hours in such an inquiry have to be the most intense.

The "scent of death" found in Madeleine's bedroom, on her cuddly toy, on Kate McCann's clothes and in the family's hire car - a vehicle rented weeks after Madeleine went missing - was detected by British scientists, who point out that there could be an innocent explanation.

But the McCanns say police are using it to try to force them to confess to killing their child.
Viewed from here, from day one the Portuguese investigation seemed clumsy and amateur.
Now that they've made Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate, official suspects - apparently on the basis of forensic evidence we helped them to gather and analyse - the British headlines reflect our doubts about the whole process.

While feeding titbits casting doubt on the McCanns to their own newspapers, Portuguese investigators were able to ban the couple from talking to the Press.

So the McCanns were unable to respond to lurid allegations other than taking legal action against one paper.

At first, police focused on a half-British man living there, Robert Murat, whom they named as an official suspect, or arguido. Their evidence?

Reporters told them he'd demonstrated an unnatural interest in the investigation. But that went nowhere, although he remains an arguido.

Not all of us think the McCanns innocent, of course. To some, their narrative has never rung true. Others think the McCanns should be prosecuted for leaving their sleeping children unsupervised.

But not even the anti-McCann group can applaud the Portuguese response to the disappearance of a three-year-old British girl.

Portugal is an old ally of Britain's, but the judicial process isn't the same. Portugal's derives from the nation's history and is matched to the nature of the country and its people. The same with ours.

This is why the EU's 'onesizefits-all' philosophy is so infuriating. A case like this exposes its weaknesses.

This isn't to say we can't co-operate with each other. As seagoing nations, Britain and Portugal have done so for centuries. And without British help, the police in Praia da Luz would have nothing to go on in the Madeleine case.

But would the 'evidence' they're using to make the McCanns official suspects warrant a prosecution here?

It's not that we're necessarily cleverer than the Portuguese. We do have our share of police malfunctions and malfeasance.

It's just that on occasions like this - the appalling loss of a child from an apparently respectable Roman Catholic family, whose doctor parents were comforted by the Pope but are now under suspicion - we are reminded that Europe is a continent of distinctly different nations.

We have been forced together by politicians who dream of enormous budgets, grand coalitions and world eminence, but have little time for recognising the forces that make nations act, and think, differently.

Goodness, it looks as though you had a lot of 'fun' last night!

I have no idea what it means for you all to belong to the EU, being so far removed and so isolated, geographically at least, we have no clear unions to speak of - except our love/hate relationship with Australia!! Although even that is changing, at least politically now with Howard gone and Rudd in - we've had a Labour government for years over here.

However, with regards sport nationalism will always rear its head (not xenophobia, but nationalism) and the country will stop to watch the All Blacks(hopefully) beat the Wallabies or the Springboks, or the British Lions etc etc!

This is totally off the topic of Madeleine though and I hope with the PJ arriving in Britian in the next few days the investigation might be forced to move into a higher gear. A higher gear, I hope, that requires them to look for a little gil that is still mssing and release her parents from their arguido status.

Hopefully there will be more people on here later on, when I pop back in after doing some 'homework'! If not, look forward to reading you all tomorrow night.
(PS Pleased to hear that you are getting some better weather over there - it's just turned to custard here in NZ, all of 8 degrees here to night - brrrr!)

Hi Kiwigirl,

Yes they did, but I missed it. Hopefully the case will move forward next week with the re-interviewing of some people. That is of course if what we are reading is correct. Having said that I still think that things will still move slowly once the PJ are back in Portugal.

I see that Alsabella has re-instated her archives on her blog, although still unable to post. Think she's just playing games. Who cares?

larah said...

Hi Helen
I suspect you may right with regards the PJ. If I recall the other time they went to the UK they left again, after not hearing what they hoped to hear with regards the dreaded 'f' word, and the investigation stalled - almost totally.

I thought/hoped that once Rebelo took over the investigation there would have been more come out of it, but there has been little movement on the investigation itself it seems.

As for Alsabella, as they say, the light is on but there's no-one at home! Maybe she's been advised not to run a blog with posting capabilities - after all her site has attracted some people with questionable mental capabilities!

Don't know what the Daily Express is playing at but they have allowed an article about the re-interviewing of witnesses to HYS comments. Was able to view the comments, I have seen worse, and it looks like it was there yesterday as well. Just as I went to refresh the page, it came up that the article may have been deleted. Someone's playing games, but hey it is April Fools day.

This is a post I pinched from the DX HYS :

IS IT TRUE...
01.04.08, 2:07am

that the Express has to conform to this? The Official British Press & Media Policy for reporting the McCanns Case:

(Or the instructions and restrictions given to the media as to the context of reporting and the limitations on what the public needs to be told)

The Portuguese police are here purely to observe the process. The interviews will be carried out by Leicestershire police.

The reason for these reinterviews are to be stated as either 'clarification of', 'going over previous' or 'tying together earlier' statements. There is to be no suggestion in the analysis that there have been inconsistencies or contradictions, although reporters may allude to these briefly in discussions with news anchors that the Portuguese are unclear about some of the timelines. All and any such references to contradictions must be referred to as 'alleged'.

The Jane Tanner interview snippet from Panorama can be shown, but not dissected. No reference should be made to any inconsistencies or contradictions in her statements or the evolution of these statements from her original description of the abductor to the police. No suspicions should be raised or inferred with regard to any of the friends.

It shall be made clear that the McCanns are not to be requestioned. If absolutely necessary, the phrase 'at this time' may be added, but should be avoided if possible.

ALL reporting must emphasise the McCann's denial of any wrongdoing and all references to Madeleine must state that she is four, or was about to turn four at the time of the disappearance.
Any outside broadcasts from Leicestershire at the time of the questionings must attempt, wherever possible, to source quotes from the McCann's spokesman. If not, a preprepared statement will be made available to the reporter on scene and this must be used as part of the report.

You should have never apologized to that couple, they are guilty of neglect in Portugal under article 138 of the Portuguese Penal Code.

Morning all
I do feel European, as well as English, after foreign holidays and being enriched by meeting a diversity of people,in my own land.
I think that this is down to the people, rather than the institutions and they will always fail,in trying to shoehorn us into the one model, where standards vary, so widely.
I can categorically state, that in my own country, a compromised policeman, accused of torture and witholding evidence, facing charges himself, would not be heading up an investigation, like this. Fact.
I have never witnessed a case here, where there were daily leaks, from a high source, in PJ, according to Times newspaper. There would be a national outcry, here, an investigation forced and heads would rightly roll. Fact.
Gagging your arguidos, at the same time as spinning against them and trying to discredit them, shows dishonesty, corruption and laziness to me, that you are not accountable.
This Portugese force have lost any claim to be a decent, modern and progressive force and their integrity is now seriously compromised.
This case, is followed round the world and many, from different lands, are appalled at the contradictions and Human rights violations, in respect of this couple.
Look at Vile's site, an old rehashed tabloid newspaper article, the Proprietor having already had to apologise and pay damages, for similiar articles, in his group. Also, see the face of two innocent children, put there for all to see.Vile sees no contradiction in this.No decency there, Vile and you call yourself the self styled advocate for children. You are a b...dy disgrace.
I agree with anon, that the Portugese will face international humiliation,in the climbdown we will shortly see.
Do they suppose, that the people will allow a fudged carryon, on the lines of "Well, we had evidence, but it was not enough, so we had to clear them, but we think them guilty "?
Forget that, because the majority of us, consider them innocent of harming their daughter
, other than the fact that they were left unsupervised.
We are far more than half a dozen geriatric patients, anon [are not you a trifle ageist ?]
This particular one , has seen direct action, over many a year, with various causes and will be pleased to join any protest or vigil.
There would be such an outcry now, if the PJ did try to extradite, because, we have lost any faith in you and you have done this, all by yourself.
You have tried to use third world communication and persuasion standards to a sophisticated world audience, where you could not beat them up, or possibly kick them down the stairs.
What about the Joana case, as it makes it's way to the European Court ?Where countries are in denial and do not even have a paedophile register, how can we have a level playing field ?
Portugal need us, a darned sight more than we need it.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Hiya Melbel

Just on troll patrol!

On Saturday there was a huge anti-EU protest in Austria as the Austrian people doesn't want to lose, among other things, their neutrality.

I think trying to force so many people, as you said, to behave and think the same way is just ridiculous.

According to the EU there are now regions (not countries). One region is a part of Britain plus a part of France. What on earth is the point of that? You can't just bundle together parts of different countries - countries that have a different language, different customs and traditions. Where in the world has that worked?

I do agree, however, that certain things about the EU are great - travelling and working abroad without visas being especially important in my case.

The lack of borders between the Schengen countries I find a lousy idea - it's far too easy for criminals to get far away very quickly.

I agree with Melbel - who thought up the concept of forbidding your suspects from saying anything while allowing the PJ to bad-mouth them to the press? How can that be fair???

Got to go.

Sass (apparently a 39-year old geriatric patient)

melbel said...

Hi Sass
You have probably gone now, but I agree the porous borders, make it harder for catching criminals.
How are our POlice Force going to feel, about working with some national EEC Forces, when even the UK laboratory and the inventor of this forensic profiling, have had to come out and caution the Portugese, that the evidence is not showing, what they want it to do ?
Quite correct, to treat the parents,as suspects, right off, as would happen here, but they have done it back to front and he spinning is disgraceful, designed to pressure and break them.
Who on earth is supposed to have said, from their legal team, that they and friends will not cooperate, with questions ?What lawyer would say that ?
They peddle lies and have met more than their match, with this family and the British public.
Course,it is all secrecy again, when it suits the Portugese, slip in and slink away, tail between legs and then a massive backpedalling, with their own public.
They do not do "eat humble pie ", do they ?
Where is the accountability there ?
Did you note the identifiable child, on Vile's site, one of the two, whose profile has not been put in the public domain, by it's parents ?They should be in touch with Google,or the parent's legal advisers. All for a cheap shot, at the McCanns. An utter disgrace.
Did you compare, how many times our blog uses sourced and substantiated articles from quality newspapers and the number Felicity uses ?
Did she ever use one ?.I doubt it.
It is all tabloid pap.

The Candy Floss blog really sucks said...

Hiya Melbel

Vile tends to write her own opinions on her blog whereas I always use a newspaper article and Rosie does a bit of both, plus asks questions. It must take Rosie ages to get her contributions ready. Mandz has also been a little treasure (love ya loads Mandz mwah mwah) sending me lots of ideas for articles.

As you say, make the parents suspects but follow procedure. Don't leak to the press which will only ensure that there is no fair trial.

I often wonder what would have been done differently if they had known that the McCanns wouldn't keep quiet and that this story would be in the news for so long.

I also wonder why the relationship between the PJ and the McCanns changed so quickly. The official reason was that the PJ had found evidence that the McCanns had something to do with their daughter's disappearance, but I do wonder, and this is just an alleged opinion (just covering myself here - no that makes no sense!!!) if it was maybe that they were just fed up with the whole case and wanted arrests to get the thing over and done with.

((waves))V to all the people who are never here but know all our comments off by heart!

Melbel,

I se on TWS that a poster called Madge has asked TW to take down the photograph heading her post this a.m. In fact she posted originally at 0751 and reposted her request again at 12.37. She feels like you (and me) that this photograph should not be put in the public domain, that the children should be protected no matter what parents involvement. She went on to say that she would feel hypocritical if she continued to post there. Well said Madge for sticking to your principles.

A few comments so far from posters saying that it is up to TW to do as she sees fit as it is her blog.

By the way I deliberately didn't make the first post this morning!

Thought I was on my tod,and you know what they do to people, who talk to themselves !
Yes,the replacement chief investigator, said that if you are in a hole, you just have to dig deeper.
What pressures can this man be under, that we know nothing about ?
I cannot believe all the waffling, there has been on this case, all the spinning out, when they have admitted there is no evidence.
They were made arguidos, they say, on the forensic evidence, but this could not have proved what they wanted,as they would not be, where they are today. The McCs would be arrested.
They would not be allocating a couple of days to this, if they were on to anything, I do not think.
Vile invited the poster saying she was Madeleine's gran, on to her site.
Spiteful Claudia, experiencing separation anxiety, from her boss, one of the Assabellas, was quick to put the boot in.
Are these people for real ?
What normal person would want to step into that nest of vipers ?

For the record, I cannot wait for the PJ to arrive. In fact, I am probably looking forward to it more than them!

IMO, these inconsistencies, if there are any, only exist because the PJ have allowed them to. These could have been ironed out months ago. The friends have said on many occasions, they are more than happy to co-operate and clear up any misunderstandings as are Gerry & Kate. I wonder what part of that the PJ didnt understand!

I think quite a few people are going to be disappointed when this pending visit is over, imo, it is nothing more than a mere formality of tying up all loose ends.

Hi & bye all!

Good morning, kiwigirl, Melbel and Sass.

I can't comment on this article as I don't have a lot of knowledge of it - I'm assuming it's like Canada becoming members with NAFTA (North America Free Trade Association). If yes, then it has created more problems for Canada.

I read the comments last nite - you had a full house last nite. Glad that Diane contacted Mr. Mitchell regarding the Mrs. Healey issue. I also see it has become the bone of contention on the Vile blog - what a bunch. Clawdia seems to be getting more and more bitter and twisted - she should seek help for this problem.

As for the PJ's - the time is more than overdue for them to get to England and tie-up loose ends. I doubt the inconsistencies are as huge as some people think they are.

Have to get ready for work - keep up the good work.

melbel said...

Thanks Sass.Appreciate that.
Just wanted to say one last thing about grief reactions.
Since the couple, do not know what they are ultimately facing yet,or whether the child is living, which we fervently hope,is the case, they are bound to have complex reactions. There are no rules, regulations or protocols for this.
After this length of time, people would have totally buckled,or, for the sake of the children, they will have done the best they could, in the circumstances, try to carry on, even though the grief and despair, frequently break through.

The Candy Floss blog really sucks said...

Just actually read the bumph under the title of Vile's site. Gave me quite a laugh.

We didn't lose Madeleine in "vein" (that is reminiscent of the Fantastic Journey). Freedom to speak about the case was also quite a side-splitter. Freedom to speak if you are a raving anti would be far nearer the truth IMO!

Hysterical stuff indeed!

The Candy Floss blog really sucks said...

Hiya Calcite

Have a good day!

When you get the time I have a question - in which way did NAFTA cause problems for Canada?

melbel said...

Hiya Calcite
Some of the newspapers, the usual suspects, have always been against the EEC.I think it has a lot of value, but people feel that the institutions, are remote and out of touch.I, personally feel, that it is our best chance, though I know that a lot do not agree, or are apathetic.
How we will go on, though, with all these different ideas of what is
a just and fair way, to treat suspects, is anyone's guess.
I have never known the like of this, in Europe and many people, are angry and it is bound to spill over, into people holidaying elsewhere.
It is unfair when we hear that the search for this child, has been abandoned, at an early stage.
I have no time for all this cheerleadering and blind patriotism and feeling that our institutions, cannot be criticised.
You have to look at the bigger picture, I think.
You will be late for work, if you wait for me, so all the best, friend from big hearted Canada.

One brilliant example I have of a Brit not considering herself European is this. I still crack up when I think about it.

I went swimming with my best friend in Britain - we must have been about 25 at the time. I had my swimming costume under my clothes so didn't bother going into a changing room just stripped off in front of the locker and shoved my clothes in. Now don't imagine music was playing and I was standing there with come hither eyes - just took my clothes off shoved them in the locker. My friend was absolutely horrified!!!

She gave me this withering look and said "What DO you think you're doing - you're not in Europe now, you now!"

Sass, while both the stronger powers (Canada and US) agreed on many issues there were certain issues they have been unable to agree on - most of them are natural resources - ie lumber.

NAFTA affected the pricing structure and in some cases, it was reducing the profits and of course, neither Canadian companies or US companies wanted this to happen. And I think NAFTA has also been blamed for the loss of jobs in Canada/US. Some Canadian companies have moved to Mexico because of cheaper labour.

In any case, I've noticed that the candidates running for the US presidency have promised a review of the NAFTA agreement.

Hi Everyone (if there is anyone around)

Just got in and saw this in the Daily Telegraph - online version....

Madeleine McCann's parents to learn of case against them
By Natalie Paris and agencies
Last Updated: 5:15pm BST 01/04/2008

The parents of Madeleine McCann could be given access to the Portuguese police's files on them within a fortnight, one of their lawyers has said.

All the latest in the hunt for Madeleine McCann
Rogerio Alves said the police case against the McCanns could be made public on April 14, when the official secrecy period covering the hunt for the missing girl comes to an end.

The Portuguese lawyer said this period could only be extended in major inquiries, such as those involving terrorism and organised crime.

Portuguese detectives will travel to the UK on Monday to spend the week re-interviewing the seven friends on holiday with the McCanns when Madeleine went missing.

Kate and Gerry McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, remain formal suspects in the case but have not been charged and deny all wrongdoing.

Clarence Mitchell, the couple's spokesman, welcomed the lawyer's comments and called for the "arguido" status to be lifted.

Mr Mitchell said: "We would hope that the police will do the decent and proper thing and open up the files.

"I would go further than that, and say once they have completed the interviews with the the friends, they should go back to Portugal and assess the evidence and eliminate Kate and Gerry and allow everyone once again to concentrate on the search for Madeleine

Mandz said...

Hi..

I think the EU has its benefits however as mentioned it makes it a lot easier for criminals to come and go which is not a good thing.

I just wanted “that” police force to have done their very best (their job) just what I would expect here however the fact that we know they have not is absolutely unforgivable and disgraceful in my opinion. Every police force regardless of what Country they are in should do basis universal police work including gathering forensic evidence etc. This was a missing girl aged 3 years she deserved better than this.

Mandz said...

Thank you CHina for that! Waw...very interesting!

Anonymous said...

Good evening everybody-
dinner on so popped in

CHINADOLL

yes, see your Telegraph article. Leaves out rather more than it says.....what of Murat? His arguido status? Lifted also or what????? Can't leave him out or in limbo if they do this. His lawyer will go berserk.....too much unexplained here.

MANDZ

I agree totally with you. I would call vociferously for an Amber Alert EEC if not world wide system of policing and immediate actions to be done visibly by ALL POLICE IN EVERY COUNTRY to do with any missing child. It is clearly long overdue. As part of the EEC Portugal must instigate same policies and procedures. This has to be a good outcome of this tragic case so it never happens like this again.

I used to love creme eggs as a kid. Too sweet for me now, but daughter can easily eat 3 on the go. AARRRGGGHHHH.

chinadoll said...

Hi Mandz,

Interesting indeed - that's what I thought.

My opinion, is that the pj have no choice other than to come over and seek clari...fication on the witness statements (as they have been bleating about it for months)

They reaslise that the evidence they have been placing so much significance on, is worthless and the merit that was placed on same, which led to the arguido status, was incorrect.

chinadoll said...

Hi Jane,

The article only quoted the McCann lawyers, as they made the statement.....I have not read any statement from Murats lawyer/representative, so cannot comment. He has had his computers returned, so they are possibly winding down the investigation.

The sooner that K & G have access to the file, the better. There might just be something in there, that has been missed/misinterpreted, that could lead to the whereabouts of Madeleine.

Mandz said...

Oh Jane creme eggs yum..!

Mandz said...

Do you think the McCann's will get an apology? Will they close the case? Will they start looking for Maddie..?

Gerry was so right too little too late...(How sad and tragic)..

I heard on the radio yesterday that they are coming next tue and will stay until the friday.

Anonymous said...

CHINADOLL

Remember Murat's lawyer said 'bloody McCanns noone wants you here go home' ... Then when they did, they 'ran away' ha ha ha

He is such a polinker that lawyer of Murat's but hs weill most certainly push for Murat's status to be clari-fied sooner, as he was made arguido before McCanns....you know what he is like. Bites ankles little happie dog... ;o(((

MANDZ

Odd how when you ore lder things taste 'sweeter' than you recall as a kid. I got daughter 3 large Easter Eggs this year and she ate them as a 'snack' between meals. Good Grief.....

I prefer lovely strong cheeses and savouries rather than sweet things. When I am given boxes of chocolates, I never, ever eat them so my daghter benefits then too. Not fair is it?????

Anonymous said...

MANDZ

I heard it was Monday they come and questionning starts on Tuesday 8th.....in Leicestershire Mercury yesterday that I copied and posted somewhere. They allow 2 - 3 days for this. So hopefully at long last things will be clearer by 10 April??? Hmmmm. If we believe itthat is.

I can't stop thinking of Murat's position in all this though, as he was made arguido first, therefore his time runs out sooner, so his lawyer must be pushing right now for his release too.....!!!!!!

I fear they will not start to look at all, after all they haven't for 10 months now in my view. In two days we enter the beginning of the TWELFTH MONTH FOR G'S SAKE.....

ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

off to wrestle with plates now for Dinner.

see you later folks, have fun.....

;o))

Anonymous said...

Hi Ladies,

As you may have read I did promise that I would forego any further dinner invitations and spend the night with you lovely ladies!aw!
Hover, I have just been informed by hubby in England that Man U are playing Roma in the Champrions League so I may have to disappear for a while. Need time away to scoff creme eggs anyway!!lol.

Usually like you Jane, love savoury over sweet, especially ripe bries and other smelly cheeses, but none of this would have happened if I had been bought an easter egg at the time. The craving for chocolate has just increased!

Anonymous said...

Mandz I'll think you'll find that the arguido status can be effective for 12 months. April 11/14th or thereabouts is the time limit for the extension for the PJ to complete their enquiries.

chinadoll said...

Mandz,

I am in and out of the office at the moment, but to answer you question, No I do not think they will get an apology from the pj, as this would look too much like an admission that they got it wrong.

Unfortunately, I think the case may be shelved and the pj will say something to the effect that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with Madeleines disappearance......leaving a nasty inference that K & G were involved.

However, as I said earlier, the parents will have the legal right to see the file - and we all know, they will not stop looking for dear Madeleine.

In addition, I think the arguido status will be lifted sometime prior to September and the McCanns will no longer be gagged and at last, will be able to speak out, without fear of prosecution.

Mandz said...

I agree Jane what is happening with Murrat? His Lawyers was another one...if you know what I mean!

chinadoll said...

Janegt,

Yes, I remember that disgusting and unprofessional comment from Murats lawyer. I could not believe my eyes when I read his statement, which was publicised in many papers - and I never read a denial.

Mandz said...

I see Helen.. well the next few days will be interesting then!

China!
I bet you're right they will leave “that” hanging over them allowing the witch hunter to keep pointing the finger etc however if the McCann's lawyers get to see this then surely they can sue perhaps? It will be very difficult for them to go out physically and appeal with that suspicion hanging over them.

chinadoll said...

Oh and another thing. When Murats lawyer made the statement that the McCanns should go home as they were no longer wanted, I remember plenty of the antis' on the DX agreeing with same - yet, when they did leave, they were up in arms - even though they left with the consent of the pj and the authorities (having already extended their stay there to cooperate with the investigation)

Mandz said...

Helen!

Do you like living there? Just curious!

Mandz said...

That's right China they are never happy are they! I remember them saying that. Damned if they do and dambed of they do not..sick sick sick...

In my opinion the lawyer should have stayed professional and kept QT. You don't see the McCann lawyer in Portugal stating anything about Murat..

chinadoll said...

Mandz,

I am hoping that the DX will hand over the identities of the Portuguese sources that released the untrue and libellous comments that the family had to endure for so long.

In addition, once the arguido status is released, the McCanns can tell the world their story and we will all hear the details of this awful nightmare - which will not paint the pj in a good light.

Unfortunately, little Madeleine now only has her parents, to spearhead the search for her, as it is clear the pj stopped searching a long time ago - or so it seems from the reports I have read.

Personally, I would like to see the pj accept a review from an external police force - but they have refused same on more than one occasion already, so that seems unlikely.

Mandz said...

hahaha...Apologies for me spelling!

melbel said...

Hi China, Mandz and Helen and Jane and anyone popping up, before I have finished
Thanks for posting article,China.it is interesting, that it says that the secrecy period can only be extended for major stuff, such as terrorism and major crime. We will have to see, but I put money on them being cleared.
Peeked on TwS and noted Bianca, going in typically, with all guns blazing, accusing us of sanctioning the poster, who said she was the gran [Maya ]
Never reads things properly, calls us all cretins, on several occasions and will never be replied to , by me, for one, if she puts her twopennyworth in.
Are we boverred ?Narrrrrh.

Mandz said...

Let’s hope they do China!

Yes at least the McCann’s can tell us what the PJ did to them and a warning to them that parents will not sit back and accept this sickening treatment. The McCann’s need to keep searching for her and keep her in the media because she might just be out there.
As for another police force to investigate surely we have a right to go and investigate if the case is shelved – as a British citizen I thought Scotland Yard had a right?

Anonymous said...

Mandz,

Yes I do. We have been holidaying in Portugal for 27 years, and inally decided to settle here. I must say though that the disappearance of Madeleine has brought to the fore the vulnerability of living here, depending on governments, police and local councils (camera's) that really we know nothing about. People might say that if you are law abiding then you have nothing to fear. Wish it were as simplistic as that. We have lovely Portuguese neighbours and try to integrate with the locals in the village. That is why we are learning the Portuguese language. However, it has not been plain sailing and have encountered arrogance from some 'officials' beyond belief. Still, it is a beautiful place to live and nowhere is perfect.

One of my observations is that many Portuguese people are very proud of their country and that in itself can make them often blinkered.

melbel said...

Some really good points, China and Mandz.Hope they really let rip, once this arguido status, is lifted.
I am sure we only know the tip of the iceberg, in how this family have been treated and how dire, this investigation, has been.
Pity that the trail has gone cold and how could private tecs, constrained by the same police, get that far?
I pray that they could be on to something, but when the guy in charge of the private eyes, was boasting before Christmas, it was heart rending..Still, they could have kicked him, into touch and did not, so who knows ? We can just hope and pray.
An enquiry is essential.
I was going to say that our Coroners have jurisdiction, but that is only if a person is found to be dead, while abroad.
What an utter mess. The family try hard to be positive. You just never know.

melbel said...

Helen Up the Reds.

Mandz said...

Hi Melbel!

Bianca is a double sided coin.. I’ve seen her slate us Proz -she looks in to see who or what she can pick on!

If the person is the Gran then my heart goes out to her however if she is not then she is NOT.

I am not a fan of Met3 for saying that however surely they must have something on this case? Surely the McCann's have advisers looking into the evidence so far because they have given them an extended contract.

What is happening in East enders? Biiiaanncaa is going mental…!

Anonymous said...

We did NOT SANCTION MAYA one bit, not at all. My post said more than that.....Bianca is two faced and has come here to disrupt before. We had a truce because I hate this. Now, if she is yet again not understanding what we post, the truce is off, as are the gloves.

Maya was NOT MRS HEALY NOR MRS MCCANN. simple as that. Acreepa was doubting Thomas, proveably also.

As usual they think us stupid and up to the silly games they play. We are not playing, we are serious and this will dawn on them once next week is over and we are still caimpaigning and their PJ are brought to book.

let's see them laugh and post then !!!! Noone welcomed Maya. Noone welcomed Doubting Thomas acreepa.........

Not at all.

They judge us by their own warped, twisted, stupid, pig ignorant standards. The names they call us beggar belief. Thick Planks as they are.

TRUTH AND JUSTICE will out. You can be sure of that. Madeleine is what matters here, not their pride, not their stupidity, not their excuses. No.

I have seen Susan Healy's posts. She posts under her OWN NAME Sue. She was not the person last night impersonating her, just see the feedjit map. As if she would post under her cat's name Maya. How ridiculous. This is a pro McCann blog, she would have been more than proud to show her name hee. This beggars belief. The trolls were out in force last night elsewhere too. doesn't work.

They are on the back foot.

If the investigation is shelved, I think that there would be a lot of pressure on our Government,to take it on.
Mandolin, a Portugese poster, on TWS [think it was him]said that the first thing that Gordon did, after signing the Lisbon treaty, was to ask about Madeleine.
Do not know, if true or false, but know I must be one of many, to write to Gordon re this, so would not be surprised if it was a topic of conversation.

Read in Guardian today, that in Scotland, on April Fool's day, you have to kick someone's bum, on the way to work.
Shucks, did I fall for their annual

I think Maya was unfortunately a fraud! How sick and deranged some individuals are. I think it was Dianeh that has forwarded her posts on to the Authorities and to Clarence.

The only person Maya showed up was herself as the poor excuse for a human being that she is!

Melbel

I heard this also on TV that Gordon Brown asked about her and I also listened to GMTV presenter who said that before he came on to the show he had to console himself before speaking about her. Well done our PM however he may have had to distance himself due to the sick status.

Tinkerbell43 said...

I should bloody well hope Gordon Brown did have a flea in the ear of the Portuguese PM. Madeleine is a British citizen and I would have heavily criticised him if he hadn't.

BTW, come on you Reds!!! My team plays tomorrow night!

BBC News are confirming my earlier post by the Daily Telegraph......

McCann papers could be released

Madeleine disappeared eleven months ago in Portugal
The parents of missing Madeleine McCann could soon be able to see the Portuguese police file on their daughter's disappearance.

Rogerio Alves, a Portuguese lawyer for Kate and Gerry McCann, said police files could be made public on 14 April when the official secrecy period ends.

He said this period could be extended only in major inquiries, such as those targeting terrorism or organised crime.

The McCanns, of Rothley, Leics, remain formal suspects or "arguidos".

Clarence Mitchell, the couple's spokesman, welcomed the lawyer's comments and called for their arguido status to be lifted.

They have always denied any involvement in their daughter's disappearance and last month received a public apology and damages from four British newspapers over false claims they had printed.

Madeleine disappeared days before her fourth birthday, during a family holiday in the resort of Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, on 3 May last year.

...................................
The interesting paragraph being:-

He said this period could be extended only in major inquiries, such as those targeting terrorism or organised crime...........

If they try to wriggle out of that, then they truly must have something really sinister to hide imo.

But China...this cannot be true because the Anti's are bragging that once the PJ have arrived and the questions asked.....charges will be made. They are even suggesting there will be a third suspect.
Ho hum.

China

Clearly terrorism and organised crime isn't applicable, but would this be under the classification of Major Inquiry ?
(But a major inquiry would move a lot quicker than this - surely)
We shall have to see how this pans out.

Hi Mum
You must have a really long list!
She is very naive and not the sharpest knife, in the drawer, if you get my drift x

Any of you lot help me please? How did you suss DT as Arepa?

The Candy Floss blog really sucks said...

Helen

Because DT wrote that long post about her husband having an affair. Then later, and signed on as Arepa, she carried on with the story!

Sassy, thanks for that. Not so clever then was she? There are many sick people out there.

Mum21 said...

Melbel...a bit blunt is the word I would use.
But then you could tell that even in the DE days. When God gave out brains she sure was not first in line.

Archer,

Whilst this is a major enquiry, it does not fall anywhere near the categories of terrorism or organised crime eg mafia.

Read two Portugese posters,Ana and Mandarin, on TWS, wringing their hands and saying they feared charges would never be laid.
They put this,in the context of a small country, being pressured,by a large one and I have read this before, from one Portugese poster, I do respect.
I cannot understand this mentality, really.
It is this fear of dark forces, working against them, almost a paronoia, almost as if,they are disempowered, as a nation and circumstances, beyond their nation's control.
Is it a national inferiority among small nations ?Cannot really understand.

Mum21,

We all know how much the antis' love the rumour mill. We on the other hand do not subscribe to the conspiacy theory rumour mill. They have to believe their own claptrap, it is what helps them to get out of bed in the morning and face another day of McCann bashing.

She actually deleted herself very quickly if I remember rightly, but I'd already copied it and apart from that we get copies of all posts e-mailed to us. That's how we found out about the Marla/Arsabliar thing!

Where is Tinks is she sulking?

Melbel,

I think the pj have a lot more to worry about - I would imagine that they are very concerned about the pending case facing the 5 pj arguidos ref Leanor Cipriano. That case certainly has the potential to go all the way to the European Court of Justice and now they have a similar case, yet another set of parents they are pointing the finger at and accusing of harming their daughter.

Two little girls go missing, seven miles apart and the pj do everything in their power to blame the parents.

Why?

melbel said...

Sorry,Mum, misread you and thought you were off.
Maybe, the lift does not go all the way, upstairs, with me, either !
