Gerry McCann told yesterday of his terrible regret at leaving his children alone on the night Madeleine disappeared.
He admitted: "We made a mistake, but we are paying more for it than anyone could ever possibly imagine."
The father of three said he and his wife Kate had thought at the time it was "perfectly reasonable" to leave Madeleine, then three, and their two-year-old twins alone in an unlocked holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz.
He added: "Hindsight has proven we made a mistake and we would never leave the children again."
In a new interview, a week before the first anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance on May 3, Mr McCann, 39, said he still believes she is alive.
But he said he had so little contact with Portuguese police that he could not be sure officers are still searching for her.
The consultant cardiologist told BBC Radio 4: "One thing is for certain, I've seen nothing to suggest that she's dead. And I mean nothing, absolutely zero.
"And I'm sure if there was any evidence then we would have heard about it a long time ago."
Mr Cann defended himself against claims that he and his wife should be charged with child negligence in Portugal - a crime punishable with a five-year jail sentence.
He said of the couple's accusers: "They have no more information now than was available to them on May 4. So why are we talking about such a charge now?"
The McCanns, of Rothley, Leicestershire, have led their own campaign to find their missing daughter, believing she was abducted from the holiday complex while they dined nearby with friends.
But they remain official suspects and have had no direct contact with police since they left Portugal in September.
The President of the Portuguese Order of Lawyers, Antonio Marinho e Pinto, said yesterday that he believes detectives are hiding behind the country's strict secrecy laws.
He added: "There are strong reasons to fear that judicial secrecy is being used to conceal the fact that the police have gone down a blind alley and don't have a way out."
Portuguese police travelled to Britain earlier this month to oversee fresh interviews of the "Tapas Seven", the group of friends who ate with the McCanns on the night of May 3.

I am taking the oppotunity to post first. I could do it most nights (my days) but dont, I dont want to seem greedy.
Kate & Gerry know it was a dreadful mistake to leave the children alone. But hindsight is a wonderful thing. It is obvious that to them, it must have seemed safe at the time they did it.
I have just watched the Panorama doco, it was screened here on April 20th, on CI, on pay tv. It wasnt on BBC world, when you all got to see it. ALthough advertised, it was taken off, and replaced with a regional show (asian, some rubbish) that was considered more relevant.
Anyway, the reason I mention it, is that the doco shows that from their table, they could see the apartment. So they probably thought it to be safe. It most likely never crossed their mind that someone would break in and take Madeleine.
And I want to comment on something else that stuck in my mind from the doco.
The McCanns claim that they went to hotel/resort reception to call the police at 10:15 but the police say they never received the call. This is a piece of propganda put out by the PJ. The doco didnt actually say that. It said that they (I think David Oldfield actually went there) went to reception to have the police called. This is a very big difference. While I was watching it, I was thinking, why would you go to reception and not call the police.
And the answer is easy. Language. The receptionist would speak fluent portugese. None of the Tapas 9 do, at least that is what I would believe, considering that they use interpreters. And than I was thinking, I wouldnt even know the emergency number. I know our (000) and the US (911) but I dont even know what it is in Britain. I probably have heard it, it just hasnt sunk in.
And then on reception at MW. I suspect that they never called the police, that is why the police never received the call. They probably just sent their internal security to help look for Madeleine, believing her to have just wandered off. And this is the crucial time, when the police should have been there.
The doco said that at about 10:45, the McCanns rang looking for the police because they hadnt turned up. So this became a big deal, because they didnt ring straight away.
BUT the PJ should have been able to sort this out in minutes. They probably did and know it happened that way. But couldnt release the details due to the secrecy laws. But because there is a discrepancy (explained) the PJ used it as a leak. A good one too, because it is probably based on truth. Just left out the crucial last bit, which is that the MW reception was supposed to call the police but didnt.
What does everyone else think?
Another Comment.
Jane Tanner seemed to me to be telling the truth. Confident and completely unfazed. Either telling the truth or the worlds greatest liar. Much has been made that if she and Gerry and friend were all in the street, they should have seen her. But what if they were facing the other way and looking at the building nearest them and both had their backs to her. You know, if they were cooking up a story, they would have said they saw her.
The stupid anti's think that JT must be lying because the others didnt see her. In actual fact, it is exactly because they didnt see her, that I believe her to be telling the truth. Incidentally, Lies for Eyes, thinks they are all telling the truth.
I just cannot for the life of me understand how watching Jane Tanner talk convinced the anti's that they were all involved in a conspiracy. Living in lala land, I think.
Is that doco the one where the producer diassociated himself from it because he was made to portray the McCanns in a less than sympathetic light???
Because I am very surprised if that is the case. Looking at it 100 days after it was first aired, it is obvious that the Panorama crew were fed some very big lies from the PJ. And I say that with confidence because nothing has come from their supposed confidence in proving the case. No DNA, no forensics etc. That so called evidence was damning at the time and painted the McCanns in a bad light (and it was all off the record and uncorroborated, which is probably why the producer didnt want it included). But after another 100 days, it is obvious it was just more falshoods.
In fact, I think the McCanns were portrayed very sympathetically and more importantly, truthfully. The panorama crews filming tallied with that of the film by the McCanns friend. It all had a ring of truth to it. The McCanns looked like a normal family being put into a truly abnormal situation. I was quite impressed by their normality. And that is something that is very difficult to stage convincingly,let alone keep it up for any length of time.
And my last comment.
The trip to Huelva, where the McCanns are supposed to have disposed of Madeleine's body. I didnt know their family friend (with is cameraman) accompanied them. I thought it was just the press following them. And the family friend said that Madeleine wasnt in the boot, because their camera case was.
Yet, the bloody PJ leaked or the Portugese press just made up that bull***t about that trip, knowing full well that it couldnt have ever happened.
AND two days after Madeleine went missing the PJ (according to the senior policeman who talked off the record to Panorama) knew she hadnt been abducted. How could they??? They should have tried doing their jobs and investigate properly.
Same as Robert Murat. IMO, another scapegoat. But in the doco, the statement by Rachel Oldfield and 2 others that said they seen RM the night Madeleine disappeared was one of the discrepancies used to suggest they were all lying. What rot is that? Surely it proves that RM was lying, not the other three (especially since others have since come forward to back them up). But what if all of them are telling the truth and it is someone else that just looks similar to RM. But even if RM did lie and he was out that night, it doesnt mean he had anything to do with Madeleine's disappearance. It proves nothing, except that for some reason, he didnt want anyone to know he was out. He may have been up to no good, and it is not related to Madeleine. Who know? But imo, if three people are saying one thing and one person saying the opposite, then it is hard to believe the three are all lying. Why would they? What could be that important? And I very much doubt that they would lie to cover up the death of a child. That is what makes the whole thing so ridiculous. You do not lie for your friends, where the life of a child is concerned. Maybe for a speeding fine, but not a murder/killing/accidental death.

I have no doubt that when the McCanns left the children they thought there was no risk to them at all from strangers - I don't believe for a moment that they would have left the children if they had thought there was a possibility of something happening. The fact that they left them for something as trivial as a drink shows how safe they felt there.
That isn't to say I agree with them leaving them - not at all. Its not something I could ever consider as I couldn't relax.

Why can't people get a grip!
They didn't leave the children alone all night and go to another village...they were nearby and kept regular check on them.
They left their children and dined in the same resort at a very short distance from the apartments.
They did exactly the same actions that the listening service provided provided by MW.
MW holidays advertise their holiday resorts as safe compounds.
Even though they have admitted it was a mistake...why are people so fixated on this when there are so many terrible REAL cases of child neglect happening right now?

As far as calling them child neglectors ís concerned I too think that is a load of rubbish. Found this definition of child neglect:
"Neglect is the persistent lack of appropriate care of children, including love, stimulation, safety, nourishment, warmth, education and medical attention."
I do realise that the supporters of child abduction and police brutality site will say that they didn't provide them with a safe environment, but a child should be safe from abductors when sleeping in their bed.

There are so many cases of neglect going on, there are so many terrible things that happen to children on a daily basis, some of whom we might even know and not realise.
But they insist in fixating on this couple, more have suffered more than enough IMO.
What does this say about them and their true motivations. And I also wonder how much time they are actually devoting to their own children/grandchildren while devotong themselves to this hate campaign.

I listened to part of the radio 4 broadcast on Thursday evening.
I have not changed my opinion at all. I believe Jane Tanner was telling the truth. In fact, I still believe they are all being honest.
The slurs, smears and speculation have been truly horrific. All unfounded nonsense put out to paint Kate and Gerry as neglectful and wicked parents. The ignorant and the callous have latched onto this as being truthful, therefore the parents must be guilty of a dreadful crime! In truth, they are guilty, guilty of an error of judgement in thinking that their daughter would be safe in her bed. Guilty for not thinking that some sicko would come along and take her. Guilty!
This will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Would we condemn them any more than they have and will condemn themselves. I will not.
My heart aches for them, especially so, because the assistance from the police has been totally inadequate.
I ask "Is anything being done to help fine Madeleine?"

JT has always come across confident, calm and certain of what she saw which was the girls pyjamas and that is why they are certain she is telling the truth.

Like you I agree there are many cases of child neglect therefore perhaps some people should get their teeth into the real cases of child neglect and not set upon people who made a terrible mistake. They are suffering and will do so for the rest of their lives. Jamie Bulgar mother does not need reminding that she should have kept her eye on her little boy yet bashing this couple has become a sport for some sick evil nasty human beings.
I feel sick for Maddie who has been let down by the police who have in my opinion allowed the real criminal to take a child away for fear of loosing Tourist Money.
What this family have gone through and going through is unbelievable and heartbreaking. All they want is their child back and yet we still have the sick and evil reminding them what they did however never mentioning the real criminal in this or other people who also left their children and were lucky.
Frightening to think that they have had no communication from the PJ to inform them of what they are doing about THEIR little girl. How sad and frightening for them. I am utterly scunnered.
I pray Maddie will be found and that Met3 get a real break through.

Exactly. It is horrific what has been allowed to happen to this couple. The PJ have had this couple over a barrel for so long now and the McCann’s relied and trusted they were doing THEIR job in finding their child and in my opinion they have been kicked in the teeth and poor Maddie let down. Jane Tanner - I've seen a news program where she spoke. She came across as very thruthful.
Why is everybody concentrating on the McCanns?
Any pain they feel is nothing, compared with Madeleine's.
The parents may, or may not be complicit in Madeleine's disappearance.
Madeleine is the only one we can be sure is totally innocent.
Anything else is just personal opinion.
We are all entitled to our opinions but please, do not put opinions
over as fact.
The only person who knows that there was an abduction, is the abductor. Unless he/she had an audience. Everything else is speculation.
Personally, I hope that we will soon know exactly what happened to that poor little girl.

If we find the way the McCanns are being treated is unfair, then we will comment on it. I agree that the one who has suffered the most here is Madeleine. However, her parents are suffering too.

This site is for Madeleine & ALL the family.
There is little we can do physically for Madeleine, we remember her everyday in our thoughts and prayers. What we also try to do is support her parents who are suffering the most unimaginable pain and who have been subjected to the most awful hate campaign I have ever witnessed.
We believe Madeleine was abducted, and we also strongly feel she has been let down badly by the PJ. There are many people questionning the McCs but on here we believe the PJ have many, many questions to answer.
A lot of our opinions are based on named, reputable sources, not speculation and wild gruesome theories.
Madeleine matters to us very much, but on here so do her mummy, daddy and wider family.

Everyone is not concentrating on the McCann’s Maddie is in most of the above posts if you take the time to read them.
As for facts DianeH was talking about the panorama documentary where it was said in newspapers that the police think she was buried in Spain however we know they had a friend with them filming the trip therefore this is indeed “fact” so what the newspapers or PJ were claiming was rubbish. Another fact is Maddie is missing which we were discussing and how sad that is. You mentioned the only person who knows she was abducted is the abductor not true Maddie’s parents know this. Another fact we are discussing is the smears and lies told about them hence the McCann’s won a lump sum against the DX for this so we have another fact which was a pack of lies told about them. The head of the PJ went on record to say his junior staff were leaking and that he put it down to lack of experience so here we have another fact.
As for the McCann’s I don’t believe they are involved and that is just my take on it and I do believe in innocent until prove guilty. Like you I hope we get to find out what happened to her and where she is and I hope the real criminal/s get caught.

Poor Mrs co. Numbers, is in a really bad way on the 3 A's site apparently, she thinks she is a clone and I am not joking, I feel so bad for her, she needs help and I praying that someone gets it for her. I lay the blame for this right at filthy Felicity/Viv's door, we tried to tell them what was happening to this poor lady and that awful hateful person would not listen and her and others actually encouraged her and now look what they have done.
The nastiest thing to was when they saw how far gone this poor woman actually was and realised that she was no further use to them they just cast her aside in the gutter.

Yes, Rosie - saw it am anxiously awaiting it. I have to leave to get my mop cut and afterwards my daughter and I are off to the vets to take her (my) diabetic cat in for his check up. He was a birthday present to her when she was 13 - she moved out but the cat stayed behind. She's now 24 and we are going out after to celebrate her birhtday. I just think everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if I don't happen to agree with it.

JJ - then I apologize. I was brought up that way too. I took everyone at face value until I started to comment on the HYS DE and was continuously attacked. And after DE closed their HYS and blog started to pop up, I would comment on Alsabella until I found this one and I got badly attacked because my opinions were not in line with theirs.
Since I've come to this blog - we've had many visitors from the other blog and they're welcome to participate but quite a few of them have been very, very ignorant to the bloggers on this blog.
Actually, if you come after hours, I'm very, very, funny - ask Viv on that one. She and I have had a discussion after hours. She can vouch that I'm funny.

With the one the chances of my feet touching the ground are nought and the other one is an elderly gentledog of about 11 - but he's a really big dog. He doesn't pull at all - in fact I have to slow right down for him. He was very unhappy when he first came in because his owner had died. Seems to have got used to it now though.
They're both lovely dogs with lovely characters but not lovely enough for me to get too attached. Sissi drama never again!
