The episode of Shameless at the centre of the police inquiry was screened a month before Shannon went missing.
Channel 4's black comedy featured the fake kidnap of a schoolboy and a £500,000 ransom demand.
Detectives have obtained a copy of the show, which drew an audience of 2.5million, and may question Karen Matthews about it.
In an episode of Shameless Liam is abducted in a false kidnap. Police are studying the show to see if there any significant similarities between the plot and the Shannon Matthews case.
In the show, broadcast on 22 January, the local TV news reports that Frank Gallagher - the dysfunctional family head played by actor David Threlfall - has won £500,000 on the lottery.
But it is simply a ruse so he can enjoy the fame and get free drinks in the local pub. His teenage daughter Debbie knows her father has never bought a lottery ticket in his life.
To get to the truth she stages the fake kidnap of her younger brother Liam, who willingly goes along with the idea.
A ransom demand is made for £500,000 to match the figure Frank is said to have won.
All along Liam was hidden with a friend of his sister a few doors away.

Not on long,as preparing for our extended holiday,next week.
I agree with Jojam about not speculating,on the Shannon case,but the general conclusions that apply to the Madeleine case, to me,are two.
Outsiders,including the Portugese Psychologist/?psychiatrist, diagnosing body language, via watching someone on TV,are ludicrous.To know what is actually going on in a case, even with daily leaks from what has been shown to be a very unprofessional Police Force,[if this case is anything to go by ]is impossible.
Just because people are arguidos [and this has a new dimension,in Portugese law]does not mean that they are guilty.It is possible to ruin innocent people's lives and those of their children,by spreading rumour and character assassination.
I never ever agreed that it was appropriate for the DE and other gutter newspapers, to be allowing ill informed people, many of them not very bright,to be allowing HYS,on the Madeleine case, or any others and hope it will never happen again.
There should be a cleaning up of the internet, with what is regarded as decent and fair and proper comment.
No professional policeman, in any country, would attempt to comment on forensic or any other evidence,in a case, he or she,is not involved in, as not at the heart of the investigation.
Not only do these anti fools comment, but some are convinced of guilt, having no doubt whatsoever.
I think that such people, are going to end up looking very silly, having expended months of energy on this.
Many,on TWS think we are paid posters, not appreciating that the majority of decent people,withhold judgement, until a much later stage.
After all, the timelines are not even sorted yet,by the PJ !
Had the daily leaks and ludicrous theories, not been overplayed, by the PJ ,none of this media advisory stuff, apart from co ordinating and giving publicity, to the search, would have been needed.
I shudder, when the chilling Irina suggests that this child would have been better off with Vile,or notdoc,as a parent, as such people,have totally lost any contact with reality and have "no values and respect for others ", to quote vile.

There is no difference....they are both children that went missing.
The only difference I can see is the British police found Shannon....Madeleine is still missing.

I see the article in the DX is saying that the Matthews family allegedly asked for money from the Madeliene fund and the police are investigating this. It is also alleged that Shannon's mother confessed to knowing where she was all along. How sad if this is true. IMO there is more to this and hopefully it will all come out in time.
Diane I agree with your post last night about there being no need to feel ashamed about the fact that you supported this family from the start. That is the difference between the posters on this site and the majority of posters on TWS. They held this mother up to be the entire opposite of how Kate Mccann behaved, and how it was fitting that she acted in this way. Hope they look back and reflect wisely on this. Doubt it.

I have never speculated on Madeline's case unlike many on the internet HYS & blogs I beleive that it is very unfair on both the Mccanns & the PJ I have always been very measured in what I say. I tend to go with My Instinct......I felt from the Start that Madeleine was 'Abducted' .........The media reporting has been appaling & has caused & lot of the speculation in the case................I do feel there may be more to it with regards to other issues we are not aware of & Portugese secrecy laws & PJ mistakes have not helped.
With regards to Shannons case.......I felt from the start that it was NOT an 'Abduction' & that she would be found safe & well............Just My Instinct

I agree with your excelent post....I think the media allowing HYS on the Madeleine articles (most of which were speculation rumour & hearsay) a big mistake that has brought out the very worst of human behaviour & caused untold damage to peoples mental health. Diane just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you with upcoming appointments - there's nothing worse than hospitals and children! My wee boy had an adeno-tonsillectomy late last year and wound up having a post-op bleed, thus requiring an ambulance, emergency surgery and HEAPS of TLC (ie two weeks off work for mummy)! This is nothing though compared to what you have gone through and are still going through with your wee girl, take care of yourself!
Sass, I finally did manage to get the wee man back to bed, two bowls of cereal later - I think he's growing as all he does at the moment is eat! Mind you he arrived in my bed around 2am as he got too cold, so I got to spend the rest of my night cuddled up around a three year old - quite nice really if you like a breathing hot water bottle.
Good to see the PJ have finally made it to London and the questioning has commenced, maybe now there will be a breakthrough...
I must say it just breaks my heart that Madeleine has lost nearly an entire year with her parents and siblings. My little girl is a couple of months older than Madeleine and the changes that she went through cognitively, emotionally and physically in that last year before starting school are huge, and all of them have missed sharing these!

A friend of mine is going through something similar with her oldest daughter. She is soon to be 12 and she is shooting up and is of course starving the whole time! She is very tall and slim (like the whole family despite the fact that they all eat loads) and is eating about double what she used to eat.
When I last got there she had just had lunch. We then had coffee and cake (oh how Austrian) and a couple of hours later she was heating up the pasta that was left over from lunch. A couple of hours after that we had tea.
Her mum gives her a loaf of bread with half a cow in it to take to school and she was complaining she had to buy something else to eat when she was at school because she was hungry after it!
Everyone is glad that the PJ has finally turned up. Naturally the antis are now saying that the whole thing has been rigged - typical!

According to 24horas the PJ have been given permission by the British police to conduct the questioning themselves this week....with the British police just overseeing.

Good grief that sounds just like my daughter...at just five she is already 114cms tall and slim. Honestly, I'm just pleased both her dad and I are working as when both the kids are teenagers they'll be eating us out of house and home regularly!
I'll be very interested to see if anything is reported on the net tomorrow morning. I try and check that at least twice a day in my breaks at work. We hear very little over here as the Herald and other national papers don't tend to run with a lot of international news!

Thats ok Jojam....I also have my own thoughts and opinions on the Sharron Matthews case. I have done from day one.
I live in a quiet seaside village...but recently a new BIG social housing estate was built here. People would not believe the goings on in this estate. It was a real eye opener I can tell you. The kids run riot whilst the mothers on warm summer days drag the sofa's out onto the front lawn...and sit there all day drinking and laughing. The language is unbelievable....from both the parents and the children.
Dare I mention that few of these parents work...but all have cars, mobile phones, Sky TV...and all the trimmings.
No wonder there is not enough money left in the pot to give our old age pensioners a decent living.

Madeleine's case has highlighted many unsavoury aspects of our society. So many alleged 'professionals' voicing their opinions for their 5 minutes. Shame on them!
We must have faith that the majority of folk are decent and caring people who see the dreadful injustice in all of this.
As for Vile's, well that is a case of putting all the rotten eggs in one basket, they have infected each other and are quite putrid. They would do well to get out and see what is really going on in the world.

Re Shannon,I do live in this big Yorkshire conurbation and agree with the Sunday Times article quote "The estate has been described privately,by criminal justice officials as one of the most deprived and dysfunctional in Britain. "
In these very deprived areas, people tend not to pull together,as can be idealised,in the press.
I am also not the type of person to bang on about people on benefits,but take exception to a poster on TWS,saying that Felicity did her site,on an unpaid basis.
I would give a running guess, that we, the taxpayer, are funding this and yes,I do resent it, as I regard it as a harmful place and would be concerned,if I could be bothered about the mental health of her posters.

How can we give evidence...when there is none in the public domain. Not for abduction or otherwise.
I tend to believe most of what the McCann's and their friends have said about that night....and I will continue to believe this unless I can be shown evidence to prove I am wrong.

Madeleine McCann’s parents, family friends and other holiday-makers have been called back to Portugal to participate in a reconstruction of the night she disappeared, Times Online has learnt.
Detectives want to replicate the events at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz on the evening when Kate and Gerry McCann reported their eldest daughter had been abducted. They have asked dozens of people to attend the event after the completion of a series of interviews with key witnesses which started today.
The unprecedented reconstruction is planned for the middle of next month, shortly after the first anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance on May 3. Portuguese police have written to witnesses, asking them to cooperate by attending the event.
Mr and Mrs McCann have not been to the Algarve resort since they were made arguidos (official suspects) on September 7. Friends of the couple have indicated that they would refuse to voluntarily return unless they are formally cleared of any wrongdoing.

The reconstruction would involve dozens of people who were in Praia da Luz from the early afternoon of May 3 until Madeleine was reported missing from her bedroom at 10pm.
Events on the ground would be compared with the timeline of evidence being compiled during interviews with more than 50 people which are being carried out by British police throughout this month.
Portuguese detectives hope the reconstruction will help them identify discrepancies in evidence and to pinpoint areas which need further investigation.
However, critics will see it as as a sign that the investigators have no idea what happened to Madeleine. Experts from Scotland Yard and Leicestershire Constabulary had advised Portuguese police to hold a reconstruction within weeks of Madeleine’s disappearance.
Seven British friends who were on holiday with the McCanns are being questioned by British police this week. The interviews at the headquarters of Leicestershire Constabulary are being watched by the chief Portuguese investigator, Paulo Rebelo, and two other senior detectives from the PolÃcia Judiciária.
Apparent inconsistencies in the previous statements of the “Tapas Seven” and the accounts of Mr and Mrs McCann have been identified by detectives. However, they have insisted that there are no differences and any minor discrepancies are to be expected in any set of recollections.
Mrs McCann, 40, and her 39-year-old husband, both doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, claim that Madeleine was abducted by a stranger just days before her fourth birthday.
The couple were dining with friends at a tapas restaurant at the Ocean Club when the abductor allegedly forced up a window and snatched Madeleine from the ground-floor bedroom where she was sleeping with her twin brother and sister, Sean and Amelie, now aged two.
Interviews will also be carried out with other holidaymakers, Ocean Club staff, the nannies who looked after Madeleine on the day she disappeared, as well as the psychologist who helped Mrs McCann.
A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Constabulary said: “We will be co-ordinating the execution of the request for mutual legal assistance made by the Portuguese authorities.
“The Portuguese authorities have asked that the contents of the request and the way it is being executed be kept confidential so as not to prejudice their ongoing investigation.”
Mr and Mrs McCann will tomorrow travel to Brussels to lobby MEPs for better co-ordination between European countries when a child goes missing.
The couple last month visited the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in Washington, United States, to learn about the Amber child abduction alert system as part of a television documentary to be broadcast on April 30.
Mr McCann wrote afterwards: “During our Washington visit we were also very encouraged to hear that, in NCMEC’s experience, the younger the child at the time of abduction the less likely that child will be seriously harmed.
“Such information makes us believe even more fervently, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that Madeleine can be found safe and well.”

Having read it...it seems to me the PJ still do not have the faintist idea what happened to Madeleine.
It also shows..in my honest opinion...that this weeks interviews are interviews only...and nothing concrete will emerge from them.
I did have to smile when I read the bit about the British police had suggested the PJ do a reconstruction way back in May last year.
They have not done bad....it has only taken them a year.:-)

Mum21, I hope you are prepared for an attack from the other blog after admitting you smacked your son when he was small. Diane only wrote that she THOUGHT of smacking her son and that was two days of verbal abuse.
Shannon case have not commented very much on this case apart from to say I was happy that Shannon was alive. Think there are reasons I have not commented: the British police did an excellent job in investigation the 'abduction'; Shannon's mom was not attacked (the other blog held her up as an example of how a mother of a kidnapped child should react).
Madeleine's case - it was just when I witnessed the hate and the jealousy towards Madeleine's parents that I commented and because I had a sick feeling the PJ's were not doing their investigating as they should be.

You have summed up my position very well.How could we possibly give "evidence " of an abduction and vice versa.?They owe us nothing, as we are just bystanders.
The emotions of some of those on tws, are way over the top and out of proportion to their involvement.Hence, to me, they have their own agendas, nothing to do with this case.
I agree with Tinks that those poor posters,are being played, as nothing over there, is substantiated and sourced.
I think that some posters,such as Vile and Irina, 2345, et,are skating close to the ice and they are in denial about the implications of the DE apology and damages.They are going way beyond commenting on articles,in the public domain and know that these articles,have been withdrawn and the DE group admitted that it was a pack of lies.
Vile cannot claim not to know what is libellous.

HelenM - went and read the other blog - what a bunch of sickos. 2345 is just plain weird, Clawdia is a bitter, twisted woman who has a secret (she knows what happened to Alsabella but oh, this woman (Clawdia) who is so RUDE AND IGNORANT to others who do not share the same opinion has too much respect for Alsa to tell anyone what is going on. As for the DNA evidence, if the PJ's had as much evidence as the other blog implies they do against Madeleine's parents, the parents would have been arrested.

Madeleine McCann's parents have been asked by Portuguese police to take part in a reconstruction of the night their daughter went missing a year ago.
It comes after UK police began re-interviewing seven friends of Gerry and Kate McCann who were with them on the night of her disappearance.
The couple's lawyers are considering the reconstruction request.
Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from a holiday apartment in the Algarve on 3 May last year.

I cannot stay long, but would like to make the following observation about this latest pj request.
Surely the pj cannot expect the family, friends & others to actually participate in a televised reconstruction of the night of 3rd May. If this is to be done, it should be done by proper actors, as is successfully done here by the BBC Crimewatch programme.
How can anyone with any understanding of human emotions, expect these people to have to relive the night of 3rd May, infront of the world. Can you imagine the fodder that would give to the internet scum out there - they would be picking over every minute detail - how they looked, their expressions, etc etc etc.
Yes, a Crimewatch style programme with proper actors - this family and all involved have been put through enough damned agony because of this incompetent investigation, without subjecting them to more.

IMO,they have had nearly 12 months to do this, when all memories were fresh. Personally I dont see why Gerry and Kate should have to relive their ordeal when its quite obvious, imo, 12 months on the investigation has gone no further forward from when it started, if it ever started! Shambolic.

Why would it need the Mccann's personally to return? In England, considered a civilised country, the police would not expect those involved to take part in a reconstruction. In England they would be treated with compassion not using bullying tactics. Very clever? I have seen no evidence of that so far Have you?
The PJ imo, are just trying to drag a bad investigation out. Its too little too late, imo they let the McCs down 11 months ago, they refused them this reconstruction when it was fresh in everybodys minds. Thats when the recontruction counted and why the McCanns REQUESTED it, because they had nothing to hide and people memories would have been much clearer then they are now.

Christabel - I went to a colleague's house once and the whole family were golf fanatics. When I got there I was told to sit down and watch golf with his wife, which I did. That was "fun". Then they took me out on a tour of the local golf greens. By then it was evening and I couldn't wait to go to sleep - I was so BORED.
The next day we watched golf again and then when the boys came home from boarding school we watched the videos of the golf games we had already watched so the kids could watch the games, too.
Later on in the afternoon (I was almost comatose with boredom by this time) I was given the choice - either go fruit picking with the mum to the dad's mother or watch the boys play golf. Naturally I chose fruit picking. When I got there this woman was miles up in a tree on a ladder and my colleague's wife told her to come down as I would go up there because I was younger. I am terrified of ladders, but because I felt bad about refusing all sorts of golfing offers, up I went. I spent the rest of the daylight hours holding on tight to a ladder, eyes shut, lobbing cherries into a bucket.
The next day there was a golf contest and I was allowed to go home! Can you imagine inviting someone to your house for one full day and two halves and offering them that programme!!!!

What a strange day.
On the very day members of the tapas group are to be questioned in the presence of the pj - the pj release/leak an open statement inviting the McCanns & Co., to Portugal for a reconstruction.
Surely the pj should be concentrating on what they are here for ie the interviews - of up to 50 people, in all, I hear. What if the interviews flag up some leads about the abductor. Surely the outcome of these questions should be the priority.
I find it very suspect that this invitation has been issued today.
The pj, it would seem, are playing mind games with the McCanns and I give up hope of them ever approaching this case in an unbiased manner.
I would not like to see the McCanns take this bait - which I feel they will not. The invitation is designed to raise questions about why they will not return voluntarily...........stitch up ring a bell?
If I were Kate and or Gerry, I would start singing like a canary about all the underhand tactics/leaks and unprofessional behaviour associated with this investigation. I would be shouting from the rooftops and let the world know the truth of this disgraceful investigation.

Good article from the Daily Telegraph. The pj declined an offer from the world renowned BBC Crimewatch team, to do a reconstruction, nearly a year ago. Seems like the pj would like to do their own reconstruction now, with the actual parties in the lead roll. No self respecting police force would expect the McCanns to appear on camera, so I would hope that this is not what is being asked.
But as for taking part in a reconstruction. I doubt there is anything that Gerry & Kate would need to contribute that couldnt be done via a video link. After all, there should be stand ins doing the actual walking, sitting etc. I wonder what the PJ would say if the G & K offered that type of support, particlularly if only being used for internal uses.
Actually the whole thing is a gross waste of time and if flying loads of people in to do it, also gross waste of money.
Should have been done immediately, and maybe then reviewed prior to G & K leaving Portugal.

I had already read that article, and it is a good one.
Whole reconstruction thing is too little, too late.
And the request by PJ is even being broadcast on our news here. We had Martin's broadcast on Skynews here as well but the local stations are also talking. And noticebly saying that Kate & Gerry say that a reconcstruction should have been done last year. Once again, PJ not coming off in such a good light, are they?
I particularly liked Martin's comment (paraphrased only) that the PJ have been criticised over their handling of the case. I think that may turn out to be an understatement.

We have an ongoing case for Danial Morcambe (Spelling) who went missing on the Sunshine coast a few years ago, when he was only 13. Was taken while waiting for a bus to go and buy his dad a father's day present.
Each year on the anniversary, the police set up a dummy of a boy dressed as he was, at the busstop to raise awareness again. They dont do a reconstruction with the family.
The reconstruction for Daniel was done very quickly and publicised heavily and from that the police know there was a car with two men parked near the bus stop and Daniel was waiting for the bus. The next sighting of the bus stop both the car and boy were gone.
Sadly, Daniel has never been found but at least his parents knew that everyone was looking for him.
Way too late for a reconstruction now.

Wait until the interviews are finished before deciding if anything else can be done. After all, if statements are OK,then they dont even need the McCanns for the recreation. And how the hell would any of them remember the absolute little details so long after the event.
As the Tapas group were all normal people on holidays, its a wonder that they can come up with a time line at all. I never check my watch while on holidays, and I was on hols in Feb and cant hardly remember what I did on what day, let alone down to 10 minute blocks. Whole thing is just ridiculous.
If PJ are thinking about reconstruction towards middle of May (hopefully this year) it could possibly be damage limitation. Extend it a few more months untl the tourist trade is secure, then shelve the case hoping that tourist will have forgotten in time for next years season.

That's dreadful. I hadn't heard of that case before. But for the parents to know that everything that could be possibly done, was, is a different matter altogethor.
I am curious to understand how a re-construction now could do much. The mere fact that it is a holiday resort with unscheduled time movements of people would make it very difficult to plot.
What has being questioned, in particular is the timings of it all! You tell me, when you are on holiday could you reconstruct one day from the next?. I know I couldn't.

I think they had all these people visiting their HYS pages when they had Madeleine as a story each day, so they were able to sell advertising as a result of it and now they do not have anywhere near the amount of browsers to their HYS forums so cannot sell advertising space on it.

According to 'some' (who I shant name in case I get sued for libel, actually, it hurts my fingers to type their names) the leaks came from the Leic police. I can just see someone from Leic police ringing up a journalist working for 24 rags, 'hello, anyone speak english?' and being passed around the office until they find someone.
